What to see and do in Mammoth ?

From quaint Old Town Mammoth, which harkens back to the town’s frontier days, to swanky slope-side neighborhoods, this small town has plenty of variety. Stay off of Minaret road for easy access to both slopes and dining. The Village is a recent addition, with plenty of shops, restaurants, and bars just a walk away. Whether you’re planning a snow trip with your friends or taking the whole family up here for a weekend, a vacation to Mammoth has everything you need.

Mammoth winters are unmatched anywhere. Towering peaks rise above the valley, providing scenic vistas and a stunning backdrop for sunsets. The town’s usually quiet streets bustle with activity as skiers and snowboarders from all over California, and even further, descend on the town to hit the slopes.

Mammoth Mountain is serviced by nearly 30 lifts, with three gondolas taking visitors up the mountain. Many top Olympic athletes take advantage of the slopes, which include Super Pipes and the more advanced Super-Duper Pipes, putting Mammoth in the company of the elite. Plus, after a day on the slopes, you can head to one of the region’s many natural hot springs, fueled by the geologic remnants of Mammoth’s volcanic past.

During the summer, the fun only continues. The John Muir Trail is easily accessible from the town, providing visitors with a chance to see one of America’s top backpacking routes. From destinations like Thousand Island Lake, Mount Ritter and Banner, and Lake Ediza, John Muir’s personal favorite, there are plenty of opportunities to see snow melting directly into lakes and waterfalls, catch local wildlife drinking from mountain streams, or just relax amidst stunning, unadulterated natural beauty.

Mammoth is also just a short distance away from mountain towns like Bishop, which is renowned for housing Schat’s Bakery, Lone Pine, which is the jumping-off point for expeditions up to Mt. Whitney, and Mono Lake, a great inland saltwater body that houses and ecosystem all its own. Just on the other side of the mountains, you’ll find Yosemite, one of America’s finest National Parks. And since Mammoth has its own airport, it’s easily accessible, with flights from LA and San Francisco landing regularly.
