Manchester is a major city in England, one that has a rich industrial heritage that sits neatly alongside the many modern attractions that it has to offer. Located in the northwest of the country it is fair to say that it is a place that is steeped in history.
This is a statement that can also be applied to either of their major football clubs, those being the Red Devils of Manchester United and the Citizens of Manchester City. The pair of outfits are two powerhouses in English football and attract thousands of fans every week.
Many of those fans come from foreign shores such is the appeal of the two teams and should you visit Manchester then spending a couple of hours to take in a Premier League fixture is highly recommended.
The big question is what colour scarf do you purchase? In the blue corner there are the defending league champions Manchester City. Their all-star team that has been assembled by manager Pep Guardiola and thanks to him they delivered a third league title in seven seasons back in May 2018.
While in the red corner there is the footballing institution otherwise known as Manchester United, the club which has won 20 English league titles (a figure that stands as a record) are undoubtedly known the world over.
Ask any football fan across the globe and they will be aware of Old Trafford, the stadium which is otherwise known as “The Theatre of Dreams” has a capacity of 75,000 while there are plans to increase this further.
This in comparison dwarves the home of the crosstown rivals Manchester City, they play at the Etihad Stadium which has an impressive capacity of 55,000. It may not be the biggest house in the city, but it is the most successful one in recent times.
Manchester’s footballing rivalry is split in two camps, the history of United with all the prestige that has gone before them after years of success both home and abroad or the new upstarts of City who have seen a revival of fortunes in the past decade.
City were languishing in the lower reaches of the Premier League until they were taken over by Shiekh Mansour back in 2008, since the arrival of the Abu Dhabi Deputy Prime Minister the club have gone from strength to strength.
Something that has revitalised football in the area, especially when it comes to derby day in Manchester. Previous to 2008 it was always a case of City being the underdogs and hoping to snatch a rare win.
In the last few years the two league fixtures between Manchester’s arch rivals have been nothing short of titanic clashes, with results tending to have a huge bearing on who will go on to lift that season’s Premier League title.
