Mariazell may be a small community located in the northern Styrian Alps and it may be known for its skiing opportunities. It is also known as a place of spiritual importance. This small village brings in visitors because of an image of the Virgin Mary, which is said to work miracles, and is carved in wood from the lime tree.

The object of veneration was brought to Mariazell in the 12th century and has attracted visitors from throughout the region ever since. Over the centuries, gold, silver, and other precious objects have come to enshrine a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary, while the larger church is a 17th century masterpiece in its own right. The larger church, the magnificent Mariazell Basilica, offers a stunning Baroque interior that was originally constructed in the 14th century.

The community is also the southern endpoint for a narrow-gauge electric railway that can take you to St. Polten. Taking a day to ride the train allows you to enjoy the beautiful views of the region while you get to relax in comfort.

During your tour, you’ll find that there are several gardens, vineyards, and brewers which ar active throughout the region. You can enjoy everything locally or take a day trip throughout the four provinces to enjoy the many captivating sites, including the shores of the Danube River. Alpine scenery comes alive during your stay in Mariazell. From its comforting waters to its soaring views, you’ll find that sunsets are more than just the end of a day.
