Travel to Marrakesh
As one of the largest cities in Morocco, Marrakesh is actually considered to be the most important of the four former imperial cities in the country. Founded in the 11th century, many of the structures that were initially built contained the red sandstone that is famous in the region and so Marrakesh is often known as the “Red City” as well. Many of the initial walls, fortifications, and expansive gates are still available to view, which is just one reason to come visit this beautiful city that is located in central Morocco. Are you ready to see and experience even more on your upcoming visit to this beautiful city? Here are a few ideas to help you fill out your upcoming holiday to this ancient city.
A Visit to Jemaa el-Fnaa Must Be Done
It is one of the most famous squares in all of Africa and it has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list for nearly 30 years. Roughly translated into English as “the gathering of those who trespass,” the square was historically the place that was used for public executions by rulers who wanted to frighten the public into compliance. You’d also find merchants, snake charmers, dancers, musicians, and plenty of life every day in this square throughout history. Except for the public executions, you’ll still find many of these things!
As you explore Jemaa el-Fnaa, you’ll notice that the square is surrounded by a number of other tempting places to visit. The parade grounds and the gardens on the edges of the square have been completed overhauled and remodeled. The mosque and palace have also had periods of renewal based on the fortunes of the city, telling the story of this city in a unique way. One word of warning: there are about as many pick-pockets as there are story-tellers, so mind your wares!
Marrakesh Is Known For It’s Souqs
A souq, or an open-air marketplace, is very much like your typical bazaar or public market that you’d find in other communities. In Marrakesh, you’ll find the largest traditional Berber market and many of the images that come out of the city come from its souqs. In many ways, the marketplace is like a visit to a miniature city all its own as the many stalls and tables offer everything from olives to slippers for sale. Haggling is an important part of the trade industry, so make sure you’ve got your negotiation skills fully primed and ready to go! After taking some time at the markets, you’ll want to see the city walls and gates.
The Bab Agnaou in particular is grand and magnificent, showing off some of the most incredible craftsmanship that the 12th century had to offer. As you proceed along the ancient city, you’ll notice solid towers still standing guard over the city. Embellishments are carved in throughout the structures and it really is a wondrous sight to behold. Are you ready to visit Marrakesh to see it for yourself? With over 19 kilometers of ramparts to explore, historic sites to see, and plenty of modern amenities to enjoy, you’ll find everything you need to relax in your own unique way here.
