Travel to Syria
Syria is often perceived as being a desert nation without much to offer. In reality, Syria is a hotbed of ancient civilizations, fascinating museums, and historical sites that no other country can offer on our planet. Some of the oldest remains ever found, more than 800,000 years old, were located in Syria.
During a visit, be sure to linger along the coastal region near the ancient city of Ugarit. This ancient port city used to send tribute to Egypt and had close Hittite connections and that wealth is still on display. You’ll find tombs, ancient walkways, and buried entrances around the old city complex, which is about 11km north of Latakia.
You’ll also want to spend some time touring the ruins of Apamea during your stay in Syria. This ancient city, situated on the banks of the Orontes River, served as a Greek and a Roman city. It also served as a capital in the region when it was under the rule of the Macedonians. Several monuments still stand, but the most impressive is the Great Colonnade. At nearly 2km in length, it was one of the longest known in the Roman world.
Head to Bosra and you’ll see a stunning example of a Ran theater. Believed to have been built in the second century, it is constructed of black basalt. It has seating for about 15,000 people and much of it has been restored to its original appearance.
Syria may be a land of shifting sands, but it is also a nation filled with ancient wonders waiting to be discovered. Allow your journey to come through here and you will see a new perspective of the world.
