Best of Milos

What to see and do in Milos ?

Milos is home to eight villages with distinguished traits that can’t be found anywhere else. If you want to be in the center of commerce and activity, the port town of Adamas is a popular location because of its scenic natural harbor. Its capital, Plaka, is located just above sea level and contains rich Venetian architecture sure to make postcard-worthy photos. From here, you can also see the harbor from afar. The village of Tripiti contains some of Greece’s oldest artifacts. For a quiet stay, the villages of Klima and Zephyria offer places to fish and landmarks whose history reaches back centuries. Wherever you decide to settle down, you are guaranteed beautiful views and an education that you will enjoy.

As an Aegean island Milos is now a popular destination for couples and families alike. Just north of Crete, Milos possesses a mostly rugged landscape. However, its volcanic history has created golden-white beaches, a natural harbor, and hot sulphurous springs. Its Mediterranean climate means rainy winters and hot summers.

The island itself was a source of obsidian during the Neolithic Age, and it is still a veritable goldmine. People continue to harvest minerals in its caves and sell them around the world. However, its crowning glory is the 70 beaches that are dispersed across the island. Lagada

Beach is walking distance from the port, and its central location means that you can eat at any of the nearby taverns and restaurants. Its fine-grained sand and shallow, crystalline waters make it a perfect place to take your family. For a tranquil setting, visit Triades Beach, which is made up of three smaller beaches and the perfect place to be away from the crowd and bask under the sun. For picturesque views, Paleochori Beach has colorful cliffs that hang over the water, and Sarakiniko Beach is widely heralded for its “moonscape” because of the uniquely shaped grayish-white rocks that make up its shores. At many of these beaches, you have the opportunity to try a variety of watersports, swim, snorkel, or simply suntan.

The beauty of Milos doesn’t stop at its nature. Occupied by civilizations such as the

Phoenicians and Dorians, Milos has produced ancient artifacts that are valuable remnants of the past. Besides the Venus de Milo, it is also the home of sculptures of Apollo and Poseidon. If you want to explore its history, there are many museums that cover topics from mining to archaeology scattered throughout the island. Afterwards, visit any of the pastry shops nearby and choose from an assortment of cheese pies: bougatsa or xynomizithra, a cheese unique to the region. In the evening, there are plenty of places to go, including jazz bars and clubs situated so that you can have ocean views even at night.
