What to see and do in Monterey ?

If you are planning to visit nearby San Francisco or Santa Cruz, Monterey is a perfect two day getaway or week long relaxing vacation. No matter your travel style or budget size, you will find something to suit your vacation in Monterey. You can stay in the heart of Monterey just a mile from Fisherman’s Wharf with easy access to main attractions, or in the neighboring town of Carmel for a quieter vacation and a different setting.

The rugged coast of Monterey is well-known for its natural beauty. The Pacific waters flowing from Alaska may be a bit chilly in winter, but the beaches are beautiful year round. Time your visit for the annual Monterey Jazz Festival or the average 70F during September and October.

Stroll along iconic Cannery Row, renamed after the John Steinbeck novel, for shops and fun attractions. An eclectic mix of local art galleries, many restaurants, and specialty shops line the avenue. Art lovers have to visit both locations of the Monterey Museum of Art for incredible early Californian art and local contemporary pieces.

For a family day out, visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium right on the water on Cannery Row. From sharks in the kelp forest to the impressive albatross, kids can meet a whole host of Pacific Ocean wildlife. Make sure to get there early for the daily sea otter and penguin feedings.

Older ‘kids’ should stop by the wine tasting room on Cannery Row for some fine wines from local wineries, or to Pierce Ranch Vineyards for a taste of Portuguese and Spanish-style wines. For dinner, try any of the delicious cuisines served at bars and restaurants across town from fabulous Italian to authentic taqueria.

Head to Old Fisherman’s Wharf in lovely downtown Monterey in the heart of region’s fishing industry. Here you’ll find excellent clam chowder and fresh fish from the catch of the day, and a great stop to snap a few photographs of sunbathing sea lions, seals and otters.

Play a round of golf on fantastic 18 hole courses, or just work on your swing in nearby Pebble Beach. If you’re up for more adventure, take the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail and uncover 18 miles of beautiful landscape – best discovered on a bike and with a camera for photo opportunities.

Walk along Monterey’s Path of History, guided by yellow circles on the sidewalk, to discover more about the Native American, Spanish, and Mexican past of this part of California. Visit one of the conserved adobes, old Mexican dwellings, or any of the three missions in the area.
