Best of Mossman

What to see and do in Mossman ?

Your first port of call is to Mossman Gorge. Getting to Mossman Gorge is not a problem; your car hire will afford you a memorable drive along the Great Tropical Drive: Mossman Gorge is only 20km north of Port Douglas 77km north of Cairns, and 2km from Mossman – so you’re closer to nature than you think.

As you are in Far North Queensland, you are graced with beautiful weather; sunny days, cool breezes, and an unhurried pace you are in no hurry here. Start your tour with a stroll through the Mossman township; take one of the historical walks conducted by the Douglas Shire Historical Society. Their knowledge of land and local history is amazing and their regional stories memorable.

City slickers will definitely get a kick from experiencing the Australian outback on a working cattle station at Whyanbeel Valley.

Australia is called the lucky country for good reason; there are over 20 sites listed as World Heritage sites: the Daintree Rainforest is one of them and within the forest lies Mossman Gorge. Owned and operated by the Eastern Kuku Yalanji people, Mossman Gorge is an important place: visitors can experience the culture and beliefs of the Kuku Yalanji people and their relationship to the environment. This is ecotourism at its purest.

Enjoy a self-guided walk through the popular Gorge circuit or swim in the translucent waters of the Mossman River. Whatever you do, make sure you don’t leave without having taken a Ngadiku Dreamtime Walk. Try either the Dreamtime Gorge Walk or the Dreamtime Legend Walk: they both start with a smoking ceremony, which cleanses and wards off evil spirits. You will hear dreamtime legends, identify bush tucker, and gain an understanding into the history of cave paintings. Along the way you will also visit a sacred ceremony site and be entertained by Indigenous performance.

Things to remember: don’t forget your camera and swimming gear. You will definitely want to take advantage of the cool freshwater swimming holes in the Gorge. Your Mossman accommodation is a 20-minute drive from Port Douglas – make sure you head out and enjoy as many of the activities on offer: swim with the Dwarf Minke Whales on the Great Barrier Reef, go hand gliding over Port Douglas, and definitely take time out to enjoy spa and wellness treatments on your Mossman holiday.
