Most

Located in the Central Bohemian Uplands, providing access to the Ore Mountains, the city of Most was built in the 10^th century. The name originated from the structure of the old city, which required numerous bridges because the area was mostly swampland. In the Czech language, “most” is the word for “bridge.”

The town developed around the lignite mining industry, which still continues to this day. The operations were never fully regulated, so some of the surrounding environment suffered from the activities. New efforts in recent years, through vineyard and orchard planting, are helping the community re-establish its identity.

The Gothic church in Most is one of those buildings which looks impressive, then tells a much larger tale. Like many churches built during its time, you’ll find magnificent spires, stained class, and plenty of personality. What you may not know is that when mining destroyed the city center, the new town was built more than a kilometer away. They moved the entire church, on wheels, to have it be included in the new community.

Castle Hnevin is another landmark to visit, with a nice setting, a distinctive style, and a fun restaurant to enjoy which offers dishes native to Northern Bohemia. The best views of the city are found at the castle, and if you can make it happen, try to have dinner out on the terrace. You can even book your accommodations in the castle if you wish.
