Bolivia has a rich history dating beyond the great Incan Empire and the invasion of the conquistadors. As a result, there are many incredible ruins that attract thousands of travelers each year. Tiwanaku, one of these sites, was a major city until a sudden collapse in the year 1000. Today, its architecture survives in stunning fragments on the shores of Lake Titicaca. Another popular site is El Fuerte de Samaipata, located in the foothills of the Andes. The site is recognized by UNESCO, and contains an ancient Chane temple, an Inca city, and a Spanish settlement. It’s a fascinating example of the multitude of cultures that have called Bolivia home during the course of its history.

If your Bolivia vacation coincides with February 2nd, make sure to be in Oruro. The carnival held there each year is a testament to the indigenous and Christian religious traditions of the nation, and is deemed a ‘masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity’ by UNESCO. Traditional devil dances, costumed performers, folk music, food, drink, and more fill the streets with color and energy unlike that of any other ceremonies.

Bolivia’s largest city, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, is a powerhouse. One of the fastest-growing cities in the world, Santa Cruz is truly a modern metropolis. Amazing restaurants feature local dishes like majao, locro, and pipian, which are best paired with chichi, the sweet cinnamon drink.
