Beautiful Bolivia, named after revolutionary leader Simon Bolivar, is a landlocked nation in the heart of South America. The country stretches from the Andes Mountains in the west to the Amazon in the east, encompassing a wide variety of different ecosystems to explore. Bolivia ranks among the top in the world for biodiversity, emblematic of the numerous stunning habitats within its borders. Similarly, Bolivian society is a mix of cultures from around the world, including Inca, European, and African histories. As a result, vacations to Bolivia are a great way to explore the varied cultures and creatures of South America.
La Paz, one of the nation’s capitals, is a vast metropolis located over 10,000 feet high in the Andes Mountains. Sucre, which shares capital status with La Paz, is full of stunning architecture and some of the nation’s most important buildings. Cochabamba enjoys an amazing climate and is very popular as a vacation destination for nationals. Carnival is a popular tradition all over South America, and in Bolivia, there’s no better place for it than Oruro. From the Andes to vibrant festivals, there are many ways to enjoy your Bolivia vacation.
One of Bolivia’s most popular destinations is the Cochabamba Valley. Lovers of the outdoors will jump at the chance to go paragliding in the valley, hike to hot springs, and more. The nearby Isiboro Secure National Park is home to four different ecosystems, including savannah and rainforest, all in one amazing visit. There are also three different indigenous tribes living in the park, and many of these locals provide guided tours and invite visitors to experience traditional life.
Cochabamba City is another major destination. Nicknamed the ‘City of Eternal Spring’ because of its amazing climate, this central metropolis is home to a host of attractions. The mARTadero is a busy performing arts center, hosting a wide variety of performances year-round. La Cancha, one of the greatest open-air markets in South America, is a great place to buy locally produced goods ranging from fresh produce to clothing.
Bolivia has a rich history dating beyond the great Incan Empire and the invasion of the conquistadors. As a result, there are many incredible ruins that attract thousands of travelers each year. Tiwanaku, one of these sites, was a major city until a sudden collapse in the year 1000. Today, its architecture survives in stunning fragments on the shores of Lake Titicaca. Another popular site is El Fuerte de Samaipata, located in the foothills of the Andes. The site is recognized by UNESCO, and contains an ancient Chane temple, an Inca city, and a Spanish settlement. It’s a fascinating example of the multitude of cultures that have called Bolivia home during the course of its history.
If your Bolivia vacation coincides with February 2nd, make sure to be in Oruro. The carnival held there each year is a testament to the indigenous and Christian religious traditions of the nation, and is deemed a ‘masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity’ by UNESCO. Traditional devil dances, costumed performers, folk music, food, drink, and more fill the streets with color and energy unlike that of any other ceremonies.
Bolivia’s largest city, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, is a powerhouse. One of the fastest-growing cities in the world, Santa Cruz is truly a modern metropolis. Incredible museums and art galleries feature artifacts and creative works from around the country and world. Amazing restaurants feature local dishes like majao, locro, and pipian, which are best paired with chichi, the sweet cinnamon drink.
