Vacation in Chile
Chile stretches along the western coast of South America, encompassing thousands of square miles of beautiful and varied terrain. The copper-rich deserts of the north give way to the populous center, the country’s agricultural hub. Further south, a series of lakes, rivers, fjords, mountains, volcanoes, and islands color the horizon. A rich and vibrant culture calls Chile home, with the history of the Inca Empire and conquistadors providing a legendary backdrop for progress. From the Andes Mountains to the shores of the Pacific, Chile is full of adventure.
Santiago, Chile’s capital, is a must-see for any lover of South American culture, art, food, and people. Stroll through the jazz clubs of the Bellavista district, head to a soccer match, or sample any of the city’s excellent restaurants. The town of Puerto Varas sits by the shores of Lake Llanquihe, providing a picturesque setting for any vacation, from family trips to romantic escapes. Concepcion, located in the geographic center of Chile, is another must-see for travelers, and also a great way to experience Chilean cuisine, from ceviche to chorrillana.
The Andes Mountains are the stuff of legend: spanning 4,300 miles and holding the record of the longest continental mountain chain in the world. Peaks over 20,000 feet pierce even the highest of clouds with their snowy summits, which feed great rivers that carry moisture down into fertile valleys. Forests teeming with life cover the foothills, providing a home to over 30,000 different plant species and 3,500 unique amphibians, in addition to hundreds of mammals and reptiles and thousands of birds.
The mountains have also been home to the Inca for 6,000 years, providing an amazing example of humans living in cooperation with nature under extreme conditions. Terraced farms grow tobacco, coffee, potatoes, corn, and more. The Chilean Andes also feature several National Parks, which provide visitors with intimate yet approachable mountain experiences. No visit to Chile is complete without paying respect to these great peaks and the awe and majesty they command.
From the towering basilicas to corner cafes, Santiago is full of charm. A variety of architectural styles are on display in the city streets, ranging from art deco to neoclassical. The downtown area is a remnant of colonial times, but the city has transformed into a booming metropolis, and also houses the tallest building on the continent. Stroll through the jazz clubs of the Bellavista district, head to a soccer match, or sample any of the city’s excellent restaurants.
Concepcion, located in the geographic center of Chile, is another must-see for travelers. Be sure to visit the city’s world-class museums, like La Casa del Arte, which hosts fiery political murals, or Galeria de la Historia, which houses artworks that take you on a journey through Chile’s rich history.
The main attraction of Concepcion is good old rock and roll, as the city is widely regarded as the beating heart of Chile’s rock scene, and has birthed many of the country’s top bands. Numerous nightclubs dot the city streets, so you should have no problem sampling the best rock that Chile has to offer while sampling local beers and wines. Chile has a large and unique drink collection, ranging from apple wine, or chichi, to pisco, popular Chilean brandy.
If you’re visiting Chile in the summer, that is, winter, be sure to check out the Vina del Mar International Song Festival, a yearly music festival held in the famous beach town of Vina del Mar. The town itself is one of the nation’s top destinations due to its beautiful beaches and serene charm, but the music festival adds a whole new level of fun. The festival is structured around a song competition in two categories: pop and folk music. It’s a perennial font of creativity and joy that shouldn’t be missed.
