Discover Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is a beautiful, Caribbean nation that occupies the eastern portion of the Island of Hispaniola. Discovered by Columbus in 1492, the island has recently undergone many changes, including an economic boom partly fueled by the expanding tourism industry. With some of the Caribbean’s most beautiful beaches, inexpensive but luxurious accommodations, some of the oldest churches and architectural monuments in the Americas and a vibrant nightlife, the Dominican Republic is a top-notch vacation destination. From the historical richness of the capital to the beach resorts of Punta Cana, the country has something for every visitor.

Santo Domingo, the capital, is a vibrant, fun city and the oldest European settlement in the Western Hemisphere. The Zona Colonial is a beautiful, historic neighborhood with the oldest church in the New World, great shopping and the best museums in the Dominican Republic. Boca Chica is a short trip from Santo Domingo and famous for its fine sand beaches. Cabarete is the kite boarding capital of the world and an awesome spot for an adventure vacation. Punta Cana, on the East Coast, has some of the best luxury resorts and beaches in the Caribbean, and is a great destination for pampering and relaxation.

Because of its unique historical position and recent economic boom, the Dominican Republic is a fascinating country to visit. Tourism is a major industry here, and the locals are dedicated to making sure tourists are taken care of as best as they can be. The beaches are fantastic, the weather is good year-round, and the prices are still much lower than a comparable vacation someplace like Hawaii, or even other Caribbean destinations, and the country, especially tourist locations, is extremely safe.

Punta Cana is a beautiful beach town on the easternmost tip of the Dominican Republic. The climate, like the rest of the country, is tropical, meaning it can be very hot during the summer months, but is pleasant and sunny year-round. Besides the beaches, the Punta Cana area is also home to a kind of artist commune called the Altos de Chavon. It’s a small artist village that resembles a 16th century Mediterranean town, full of great restaurants, fantastic galleries where you can find local art at great prices, and hand-crafted goods. There are also numerous wildlife parks and nature preserves in the area, including Saona island or Manati park, famous for its dolphins.

Cabarete is a must-see town for kite boarding enthusiasts, and has some fabulous beaches. Even if you’ve never been kite boarding, it’s a breathtaking sport to watch, and you will find some of the most experienced kite boarders in the world on Cabarete’s beaches. There are also numerous schools that offer English-language kite boarding lessons at a reasonable price.

The Dominican Republic’s beach cities are places of fantasy: sit on the beach sipping a cocktail made with local rum, enjoy world-class cuisine from resort restaurants, go horseback riding through a jungle or across a white-sand beach—the sky is truly the limit, with helicopter tours also being popular in many locations. You can finish your day with a dip in the pool and a world-class massage, then head into one of the many bars or nightclubs to mingle with locals and visitors from around the world! What are you waiting for? Paradise is ready!
