Norrköping, which is often referred to as “Little Manchester,” sits on an inlet that comes off of the Baltic Sea. It’s been a good harbor for the area over time and has often featured an emphasis on the textile industry. Initially established as a fort, this city burnt to the ground more than once, yet has always been rebuilt to have more influence than it did before. At one point in the 1800’s, after two additional fires, laws were established to forbid the construction of wooden homes. Nicknamed ‘Little Manchester’ thanks to its history of textile and paper production, Norrkoping once laid claim to producing 70% of all textiles made in Sweden. Today the city uses its location, by the mouth of the Motala Strom river, for more pleasurable purposes, having transformed the defunct canals and mills into stylish places to drink, dine and relax. Visitors can explore the city on foot or via the retro trams. Norrköping is a fantastic city to discover! Shopping in Norrköping

A characteristic feature of Norrköping is of course the yellow trams, which offer an easy way to discover the city! Drottninggatan, in the centre, is the biggest shopping street, where trams and shops jostle for space. Along the same street, you’ll find shopping centres with plenty of shopping and a little further down, nice little shops. Gamla Stan (the Old Town) and Knäppingsborg are other nice suggestions with small, charming shops including some where you can buy locally produced food over the counter.

If you don’t have wheels of your own, the local bus route will take you right there. It’s an exciting experience for anyone and the entry prices are definitely budget friendly.

One of the best art museums in the country is also in Norrköping as well. You’ll enjoy the looks at Swedish interpretations of the cubism movement while a lot of the modernism pioneers are featured in the museum’s permanent collection. The original church burned in the fires of 1719 after the Russians attacked this city, but it was rebuilt in 1766 using stone and has withstood the various tragedies that the city has seen since.
