With a huge Victorian Precinct, stunning natural beauty surroundings, new age and traditional museums and some of the worlds most unique penguins, Oamaru is a sure place to visit on your next trip to New Zealand.

The natural beauty is astounding in Oamaru, once you experience the feeling of nature you will find it hard to adapt back to city life again. It is not only the beautiful architecture that makes you feel that you have been transported into another world, it is also the great range of activities that are available to every traveller whether you are with family, friends or flying solo.

Oamaru is well known for its fantastic local produce, you can sample the local delights on the actual farms they are produced, it doesn’t get much fresher than that. Farmers markets are also held every Sunday morning in the Victoria Precinct, they are full of local fresh produce, it is the perfect way to start your day.

Make sure you check out the huge variety of museums, shops and galleries most of these built within the 19th century. Oamaru boasts one of the country’s oldest public gardens, take a walk through on a sunny day and experience the scents and flowers that are unique to New Zealand.

For something a little left of centre visit Oamaru’s massive train engine that emits smoke and fire, located at Steampunk HQ. It is futuristic yet throws back to the past eclectic sci-fi gallery that exhibits unusual yet interesting artworks dedicated to the steampunk culture.

One of the most popular and adorable attractions in Oamaru is the colony of little blue penguins. They live in a disused quarry on the harbour not far from the historic precinct.

There are also yellow eyed penguins along Bushy beach, be warned they do like to hide. The best time to visit if you want to catch a glimpse of these cute creatures is around sunrise and sunset. It is a great experience and well worth a visit, if you don’t manage to spot a penguin the view should be good enough for anyone.
