Travel to Kiribati
The Republic of Kiribati is located in the central Pacific. It is comprised of 33 reef islands and atolls, along with Banaba, a raised coral island. A majority of the nation’s population lives on Tarawa Atoll. The islands are spread out across the equator and the Line Islands, the easternmost of the nation that are south of the U.S. state of Hawaii, have the most advanced time of any time zone.
When planning a holiday, be sure to coordinate the dates properly. Until 1995, the International Date Line went right through the country.
What you’ll find in Kiribati is some stunning beach scenery. It is the perfect place to find yourself on a boat, enjoying some gentle waves, as you anchor in a lagoon. Come ashore to relax on a white-sand beach as palm trees wave above you. Traditional cultures are still quite alive here, especially on the outer islands, which makes the experience a fun adventure.
You’ll also find numerous war remnants as you explore Kiribati. Fierce fighting on the islands led to the development of bunkers, pillboxes, and defensive guns. You can still see shipwrecks, aircraft wrecks and other wartime artifacts when the tides go out. Some islands even offer guided tours of these war remnants.
If you can get a permit, explore the Phoenix Island Marine Protected Area. The vistas are gorgeous and the marine life is abundant. Access is extremely limited, so ask about this option during the initial planning stages.
It may not be as developed as other Pacific locations, but Kiribati has its own unique charm to enjoy. Make your way here and you will experience tranquil island life.
