Travel to French Polynesia

Divided into 5 groups of islands, French Polynesia is located in the South Pacific and is an overseas collectivity of France. It is often referred to as a country, but the 118 islands and atolls, which include Tahiti, and independence is being worked toward. That means it is still part of Europe. That means a valid passport or a national ID card is required for entry for a stay of any length for many visitors.

You’ll find that the resort atmosphere in French Polynesia is quite magnificent. There are warm beaches, cool cocktails, and endless time to relax out on the warm sands. The capital city, Papeete, is the cultural and administrative capital, and it offers a number of impressive landmarks, gorgeous beaches and an exciting nightlife.

Elsewhere in French Polynesia, Bora Bora is a popular tourist destination, while the islands of Moorea, Tahaa and Tikehau, a coral atoll whose beauty has to be seen to be believed, are also well worth a visit.

As you might expect from a nation that consists of so many islands, the sea is never far away when you’re in French Polynesia. One of the most relaxing ways to spend an afternoon here is by taking a cruise on the water. As well as an opportunity to enjoy a cool breeze and a well-earned rest, you will also be able to savour views of the island which will remain in the memory for a lifetime. There are several cruises to choose from at the harbour in Papeete.

It can get extremely hot on Tahiti during the height of the summer, but one place where you will find some respite and a spectacularly beautiful natural wonder is at Maraa Grotto. There are three main caves here, and they should be on every visitor’s schedule. Be sure to bring your camera, and if it’s a really hot day you might want to linger here for a little more time than you had originally planned.

There are plenty of places in French Polynesia to enjoy some snorkelling, and the clear waters allow you to see a huge amount of marine life when you dive. Perhaps the most pleasant place of all is at the waveless lagoon on Bora Bora. If you enjoy viewing the undersea world in all its glory, this is the destination for you.

Thanks in part to the relaxed atmosphere of the islands, shopping in French Polynesia is always a pleasure and never a chore. And while you will find chic boutiques in Papeete, sometimes it’s more fun to shop at the smaller stores. You will see a huge number of products made from black pearls, a local speciality of course; so make sure you buy an item of distinctive jewellery during your stay.
