Travel to Wallis and Futuna

Wallis and Futuna are a French island collectivity that lies in the South Pacific, with Fiji, Tonga, and Tuvalu serving as its neighbors. It is comprised of three primary volcanic islands and several different islets that are split into the two groups that form the name of the collectivity.

Although these two island groups are linked for governing purposes, the cultures of Wallis and Futuna are very different. The Wallis Islands are connected ancestrally to Tonga, while the Futuna Islands are connected to Samoa. There is a certain competitiveness to the two island groups as well, which makes for an intriguing holiday option.

You’ll find surfing and sailing tend to be popular pastimes on the islands. You’ll also find that ancient artistic crafts are still practices. Sheets of bark, called “tapas,” are decorated with shells and paints derived from local plant life. On the islands, only women create are, because the expertise to do so is “in their hands.”

During your stay, be sure to stop and view Lake Lalolalo. It’s the largest lake on the island and is an almost perfect circle when seen from above. Rocky cliffs stand up to 30m in height around the dark waters of the lake. It is virtually in accessible, though estimates place the depth of the lake at 80m. Rumor has it that the US military once dumped unwanted equipment into the lake.

Try the caves at Loka as well. It is a natural grotto that is dedicated to St. Bernadette.

Wallis and Futuna may be a little-known outpost, but traveling to this island destination can be a very simple and easy process. Find out today if this could be the next perfect holiday destination for you.
