What to see and do in Orewa ?

Orewa, the gateway to the Hibiscus Coast and nearby Whangaparoaoa peninsula offers a wide range of beaches, with popular tourist, recreational and wildlife attractions. Whangaparoaoa is Maori for ‘Bay of Whales’, and pods of orca and dolphin are regularly spotted in the waters off the peninsula.

Orewa is 40 kilometres north of central Auckland. Near Orewa Beach, there are great hinterland escapes. The Hibiscus Coast runs north from the Whangaparaoa Peninsula through Orewa to Waiwera and is made up of several small picturesque areas such as Stanmore Bay, Arkles Bay, Army Bay, Manly, Red Beach, Gulf Harbour, Silverdale and Stillwater, but the main peninsular town is Whangaparaoa.

Opportunities for those looking to explore, or just a fun filled family day out, include Snow Planet an indoor snow recreation centre in Silverdale, Silverdale Luge, Go-Kart Centre, the Pacific Plaza shopping centre, cinemas, the Waiwera Hot Pools, Shakespear Regional Park, and Gulf Harbour.

Gulf Harbour is near the end of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, which is close to the wildlife reserve Tiritiri Matangi Island. Ferries transport people to the island from the harbour and back on a regular basis. The peninsula is in the northern North Island, close to the base of the North Auckland Peninsula.

Gulf Harbour is a development some 4 km from the end of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, towards the northern end of Auckland, New Zealand. It has one of the country’s largest marinas, one of the country’s top golf courses, and is regarded as a luxury retreat.

Snowplanet is one of the best attractions and was New Zealand’s first indoor snow facility. The snowdome, approximately 40 x 200 m and built on the side of a hill, features 50 centimetres of real man-made snow, three tows, a terrain park for freestyle skiers and snowboarders and a separate learners slope. The company offers ski rentals, lessons and a wide range of programs for all abilities. The store sells gloves, helmets and socks and offers a restaurant and licensed bar.
