Found in Lesser Poland, Oswiecim has gained fame as a destination because it is known as the location of the Auschwitz concentration camp during the second world war.
The history of this city is much richer, however, and dates to the earliest moments of Polish statehood as it is one of the oldest castellan gords in the country.
Many who come here, however, wish to spend much of their time touring the various camps that were established by Nazi Germany during the war.
Auschwitz was first constructed in 1940 by Polish political prisoners. It would be the location of many atrocities, expanded upon with the completion of the Auschwitz-Birkenau project. From here, the Final Solution was implemented by governmental forces with great ferocity. Out of the 1.3 million people estimated to have been sent to the camps, just 200,000 survived.
The grounds of both camps have been turned into the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum. Ongoing research about the Holocaust still occurs within the museums facilities. National exhibitions have been located here since 1960, featuring specific countries that are honored.
For more than 35 years, the museum was directed by one of its former inmates. Areas of remembrance include the infamous train ramp, the 3km walk between the two camps, and several of the original buildings are available to tour as well.
