One of Europe’s Most Fantastic Palazzos Resides in Padua

The Palazzo della Ragione has a great hall on the upper floor. So great is this hall, in fact, that it is believed this Palazzo has the largest roof that is not supported by columns in all of Europe. The hall itself is over 27 meters in length and the walls are covered with numerous frescoes that will make you want to linger. Most remarkable is the fact that the construction of this building began in the 12^th century. A restoration had to occur in the 18^th century, however, after a storm tore the roof off the building.

One of Europe’s best leisurely walks can also be found in Padua. The Basilica of St. Giustina faces the piazza of Prato della Valle and offers a monument-lined walking path along a canal. One one side you’ve got the religious buildings of the Basilica and on the other you’ve got the expansive green space with small trees. In the Summer, Padua comes in droves to enjoy the sun, the festivals, and the chance to skate.

Ancient Padua Is Still On Display As Well

Built in the 10^th century, the Santa Sofia is the oldest church structure that can be found in the city. Although the interior is rather sparse, the Romanesque architecture could easily have come from centuries earlier. The many stone arches are beautiful to see and the fact that they continue to remain intact despite the building starting to have an incline is a testament to the skills of those who labored so hard to build this structure.

Although there are many bridges in Padua, one of the most fascinating is the Ponte San Lorenzo. It’s one of the earliest segmental arched bridges in the world and is one of 4 bridges that the Romans built in Padua. It’s a three-arched bridge that has been framed by the buildings that surround it. Today the bridge is intact underground and can be seen at certain times, so be sure to plan ahead. The architecture of the piers of this bridge are the only example of this architecture that has ever been found.
