Picton is a beautiful seaside town that can be found on the South Island. From here, you can connect with a ferry service that takes you on daytrips to other New Zealand destinations. You can also begin to explore the local forest and island attractions that are available throughout Marlborough Sounds.

Picton was built around a harbor that is extremely sheltered, giving the atmosphere of the community a calm that can be difficult to find elsewhere. Beach opportunities may be limited here, but you’ll find plenty of park space, walking trails, and various galleries to explore.

The Sounds are an excellent fishing and diving area, though the waters can sometimes be dangerous. Head out to the wreck of the MS Mikhail Lermontov, which sank in 1986, near the mouth of Queen Charlotte Sound for the best diving experience. Take care if the winds blow from the north or south while in one of the straits.

Interesting historical artifacts can be found in Picton as well. At the Edwin Fox Maritime Center, you’ll find the remains of the only surviving vessel that once transported convicts over to Australia. This small museum has a few other small exhibits to explore that trace the history of the region and country as well.

Wandering the lovely streets to explore the arts and crafts community is always a highlight of a stay in Picton as well. If you wish to visit the Marlborough Sounds or you plan to visit both islands while staying in New Zealand, then make sure this small town is on your itinerary. You will not want to miss it.
