As a crossroad to the north, south, east and west, Port Augusta offers a taste of the diverse Australian outback. Basing yourself in the town allows easy access to explore the various regions of the sunburnt country. Travelling in any direction will provide an exciting and interesting experience

The focus on eco-tourism in Port Augusta places value on natural attractions and native wildlife. The Wadlata Outback Centre is a popular attraction designed to introduce tourists to life in outback Australia. Visitors can experience the Tunnel of Time interactive display featuring information about Aboriginal and outback history.

Another popular tourist destination is the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden. Located north of Port Augusta on the Stuart Highway, the gardens are home to low-rainfall native Australian plants and wild animals. Take a stroll through the 250 hectares of land or enjoy a coffee and a bite to eat at the café. With views across the saltbush plains to the Flinders Ranges, the botanic garden is well worth a visit.

To see more of the Australian countryside, take a journey on the Pichi Richi Heritage Railway. The train travels from Port Augusta to the town of Quorn through the Pichi Richi Pass. The trip is the perfect way to experience outback Australia in the comfort of a train.

Back in Port Augusta, throw yourself into the Australian lifestyle. Head to the coastline to enjoy a spot of fishing, sailing or canoeing. Keep an eye out for dolphins that are frequently spotted in the Spencer Gulf.

After a big day on the water, enjoy a cold beer at popular local watering hole, The Flinders Pub. The pub is a great place to meet the locals and immerse yourself in the outback lifestyle. Have a meal at the bistro or strike up a conversation at the bar.

While you are in town, don’t forget to do a spot of shopping and pick up a few souvenirs. Commercial Road is the main shopping street in Port Augusta and features supermarkets, department stores, clothing boutiques and banks. Grab a bite to eat at one of the local cafés while you’re there.

A day trip to The Flinders Ranges

The Flinders Ranges are one of South Australia’s most popular outback tour destinations, and are world-renowned for their rugged mountain landscapes, spectacular gorges, sheltered sandy creeks lined with majestic River Red Gums, and their abundant flora and fauna. An authentic Australia outback destination, the Flinders Ranges are nevertheless easily accessible from the South Australian capital of Adelaide.

The Flinders Ranges are a perfect location in which to witness and marvel at nature on a grand scale. Home to magnificent, rugged and uncompromising landscapes, they are truly a destination where you can get away from it all. Though they seem a million miles from the hustle and bustle of city life, the southern areas of the Flinders Ranges begin only 170 kilometres from Port Augusta. Wilpena Pound is around 160 kilometres (two hours drive) from Port augusta. Many different routes are available to explore the Flinders ranges, and all offer excellent scenery. To fully appreciate the area, a few days at least are necessary. For those without transport there are several Flinders Ranges tours operating from Port Augusta.

The Flinders Ranges National Park is situated in the Flinders Ranges between the outback South Australian towns of Hawker and Blinman. Covering over 950 square kilometres, the park is about 450 kilometres north of Adelaide and offers a broad range of outdoor activities for all ages and tastes including camping, bushwalking, scenic touring, photography, birdwatching and Aboriginal and European tour activities exploring the history and cultures of the region.

Nocturnal animals such as dunnarts and planigales are rarely seen as they are mainly active at night and are generally quite small. Bats represent one-third of the native mammal fauna of Flinders Ranges National Park. Their high pitched sounds can frequently be heard as they hunt insects attracted to the light of camp fires at night. Echidnas (native Australian porcupines) are common within the park in early spring (Sep-Oct). Over 100 native bird species are found in the Flinders Ranges National Park, including colourful Australian Ringneck Parrots, Pink and Grey galahs, the migratory Rainbow Bee-eater, the small Elegant Parrots and the Red-capped Robin. Tree-lined creeks and springs provide an ideal habitat for a large variety of reptiles, including skinks, geckoes, legless lizards, lizards, goannas and snakes. Now rare, the large Carpet Python can be found in tree hollows, on rock ledges, and moving on the ground to hunt at night.
