Port Douglas

Located in northern Australia, Port Douglas is a small town that can provide you with the classic resort experience. Developed originally around the local mining industry, you’ll be able to access two of Australia’s world heritage sites here quite easily: the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest.

Marine sports are particularly popular in Port Douglas because of its location. When the trade winds blow from the south, kitesurfing is a world-class experience. Head out to the southern portion of 4-Mile Beach to experience the best waves during the winter.

Even though Port Douglas itself is a rather small town there is no shortage of things to do. Macrossan Street is the centre of Port Douglas and offers boutique shopping, chic cafés and al fresco dining. The palm tree lined Four Mile Beach features what feels like an endless strip of golden sand and clear blue water and is the perfect place to spend the day relaxing in the sun. The Port Douglas Yacht Club offers beautiful views and on the nearby Wharf Street you will find some of the best restaurants in Queensland. Port Douglas also offers access to nine golf courses.

Port Douglas is the perfect base for exploring the best of the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest. A highlight of any Port Douglas vacation is a trip to Agincourt Reef where you can snorkel and dive amongst some of the most pristine coral formations in the world and encounter friendly marine life including reef sharks, clown fish and eels. Water visibility in the area is fantastic. For the ultimate day out, take a sailing trip to the uninhabited Low Isles. A major turtle habitat, Low Isles has everything you could want in a tropical island paradise: crystal clear calm blue water, sandy beaches and excellent snorkelling.

Contrast the splendour of the Great Barrier Reef with the tropical rainforest of the Daintree. The Daintree Rainforest is the oldest living rainforest on earth and is also a World Heritage listed site. Mossman Gorge is the closest part of the rainforest accessible to visitors from Port Douglas. A short 15 minute drive out of Port Douglas, Mossman Gorge offers rainforest walks and spectacular views of the Mossman River. A must-do at Mossman Gorge would have to be a Dreamtime Gorge Walk, conducted by local Indigenous people who will offer you interesting insights into the rainforest.
