There’s a beach for everyone at Puerto Escondido. If you’re an experienced surfer looking to ride some of the best waves in the world, Zicatela Beach is the spot for you. The main beach is a better bet for families with children looking for slightly calmer waters on their Puerto Escondido vacation. It’s also a great spot to play some soccer or volleyball on the sand or hire a boat to take you out on a tour. Angelito Beach, famous for its palapas restaurants housed in open-air thatched huts, boasts calm, turquoise that make it perfect for some relaxation or gentle splashing around.

Its world-famous coast is its biggest draw to visitors, and on your Puerto Escondido vacation you’ll be able to enjoy all different kinds of beaches. The enormous waves at Zicatela Beach led to it being voted one of the top ten surfing spots in the entire world. Each November the beach hosts an international surfing competition that brings in the best surfers from dozens of different countries.

Zicatela’s large waves aren’t really suitable for swimming: Marinero Beach is the best spot for that. The calmer surf and weaker undertow here make it perfect for beginning surfers, bodyboarders and families with young children who want to just splash around in the turquoise water.

When you need a break from the waves, you can take a stroll down the city’s main street, known to the locals as El Adoquin. This promenade which runs parallel to the beach is lined with countless shops, cafes, restaurants, bars, hotels and nightclubs. This is one of the best spots to try some of the delicious local cuisine, which is based mainly on seafood dishes and the several different banana, chocolate and coffee plants that are native to the area. The street becomes a hub of activity after sunset: cars are forbidden after 5pm and you’ll find tourists and locals alike milling around in the warm night air.

The best way to experience Puerto Escondido’s astounding natural beauty is walking down the Andador Escéncico, a set paths and bridges that runs along the coast starting from the city’s principal beach, over the stunning seaside cliffs and past the foot of the lighthouse to a stunning lookout which offers some truly unforgettable views.
