What to see and do in Punakaiki ?
Punakaiki offers many different activities for visitors to participate in. You must, of course, visit the Pancake Rocks and its unique blowholes. You can also walk along the Truman Track and explore the lovely beaches of the West Coast. If you’re looking for something a little different, Punakaiki also offers horse treks into Paparoa National Park.
Punakaiki’s Pancake Rocks are truly a sight to behold, and are very unique formations that you won’t be able to see anywhere else in the world. They are so named because the limestone foundations have been eroded, moulded and sculpted by years and years of exposure to nature and look like layered pancakes on top of one another.
The tracks around the Rocks offer a stunning view of the Tasman Sea, and if you time your trip right, you will even be able to watch the blowholes explode with sea spray. This only happens at high tide, so make sure you don’t miss this wonderful feature of the area. The track is a little steep, so it is not recommended for people with prams or wheelchairs, but children should be all right if they are under supervision.
You can also visit Punakaiki Beach – this beach is as pristine as you can get, and is not often frequented, so you can take the children for a relaxing day off, or go with that special someone to share a private, unique experience. It is also the last stop on the horse trek, if you decide to explore this lovely area in a different way. The horse treks take you across Punakaiki River and through the Punakaiki National Park, with healthy pauses to enable you to soak in the atmosphere and beauty of this place. They are also available for children and adults alike.
Punakaiki National Park is a must visit if you are a fan of nature and all things forest related. It is most well known for its wide variety of birdlife, including plovers, paradise ducks and native wekas. It also showcases beautiful limestone cliff faces and lush green rainforests that will take your breath away.
