What to see and do in Rainbow Beach ?
Rainbow Beach hosts the famous coloured sands that sprawl across towering cliffs. Walk south from the surf club, preferably at low tide, to meet the coastal cliffs. A visit to the Carlo Sand Blow is a must visit, not only for its’ spectacle but vantage of the area. You’ll be able to see Double Island Point, Tin Can Bay and the coloured sands from this spot. There’s also paragliding and hang-gliding available from this famous spot. Get there via Cooloola Drive, then walk a short distance along a wooded track.
The Double Island Point Lighthouse is the other must-see for spectacular views. Double Island Point claims the title of the longest wave break in Australia. View the breaking waves and beyond from the Lighthouse. This spot is a particularly popular place for marine life. You’ll see pods of dolphins, turtles, dugongs, sharks and other marine life in abundance. For an opportunity to see dolphins up close try sea kayaking and canoeing. There are kilometres of sheltered water to explore from Carlo Point – enough for even the most adventurous visitor.
Fishing is a popular attraction of this region. Board a fishing charter for ocean fishing or hire a tinny to make your own way on the estuaries; or simply choose a spot on the beach. You can also explore the protected waterways from Rainbow Beach to the Great Sandy Straits, at the tip of Fraser Island. Catches usually include Whiting, Flathead, Dart, Tailor and Bream.
Situated right next to the Great Sandy National Park, picnics and bushwalking are popular activities. The Cooloola National Park is a section of the Great Sandy National Park, and stretches from Rainbow Beach to the Noosa River. You’ll find Seary’s Creek, the Cooloola Great Walk, the Cooloola Wilderness Trail and the popular Bymien picnic area. For freshwater swimming visit Poona Lake, a beautiful tea-coloured freshwater lake circled with white sand. Take the 2.2 kilometres walking track from the Bymien picnic area.
