Rakiraki is a picturesque district on the northern coast of Viti Levu, Fiji’s largest island. Rakiraki is the launching point for nearby Nananu-i-Ra Island which has excellent diving. Hire a car and explore the district, stopping at its many beautiful beaches for a swim.
Rakiraki is more developed than other Fijian holiday spots and all the creature comforts of home are just a stroll away, with ATMs, supermarkets and an excellent local produce market. Explore Fijian culture in Rakiraki by visiting Navatu Rock, where pottery dated to around 1000BC has been discovered. Don’t forget to explore the ocean and take a tour to the nearby reefs.
Stay at the many beaches when looking for friendly Rakiraki accommodation. Volivoli Beach and Wananavu Beach offer water-front accommodation and plenty of activities. Stay along King’s Road, surrounded by lush tropical rainforest and only five minutes’ drive from Rakiraki town centre. Staying near the road gives you easy access to the rest of the district and surrounding area.
For a different style of Rakiraki accommodation consider staying on a boat based at the town’s port. This way you can explore nearby attractions without the hassle of changing hotels. Still staying in the district, spend a few nights on tropical Nananu-i-Ra Island, just 1.5km offshore.

What to see and do in Rakiraki ?
Rakiraki is a hub for surrounding attractions such as ancient cultural sites and reef adventures. Take a day to explore local ruins and spend a day out on the water. Browse local produce markets and pick up food for a picnic. Go for hike to the local water holes and walk through Rakiraki’s beautiful rainforests.
Visit the Tomb of Udre Udre, a fearsome chief who holds the Guinness World Record for most prolific cannibal. A visit to the tomb of this infamous man gives you an insight into the life of this frightening man – just don’t expect to sleep well that night!
Navatu Rock is home to some of Fiji’s oldest pottery, dating back over 2000 years. The rock once had a fortified village on its summit and is said to be the jumping off spot for spirits heading to the afterlife. The rock is a short 10km drive from Rakiraki town centre.
Visit the district’s Catholic mission which depicts a Fijian Jesus on the church’s walls. You can take a taxi from King’s Road or travel with the locals on the district bus. Small donations are welcome at the mission.
Spend a day diving or even live aboard a dive boat and discover the district’s spectacular reefs. Day trips can be easily organised from Rakiraki to any of the amazing dive sites. Other water sports include kayaking and fishing trips. Head across to Nananu-i-Ra Island to learn to windsurf or even kite-board.
Explore Rakiraki’s local ranch where you can watch Fijian cowboys chase their herds through mango plantations. Over 5000 head of cattle live in the district and they are a vital part of the local economy. If you feeling thirsty, stop and sample the international Fiji Water, which is bottled in the area.
Have a day staying at your resort and get into a friendly match of pool or volley ball. Volley ball is very popular in Fiji and the staff might join in and show you how it is done. Finish your day by enjoying a traditional meke performance in your resort garden.
