Travel to Rendsburg

You’ll find Rendsburg along the Kiel Canal right on the River Eider. It’s a relatively small town in northern Germany and the founding of the community isn’t really known. It was first mentioned as a community in the late 12th century and has often passed between German and Danish control over the centuries, although it has remained part of Germany since 1866.

The river has always provided access to the North Sea for small boats, but the canal has made the community an important seaport and dockyard. Although Rendsburg is often thought of as a working-class community more than a tourist destination, there are still some amazing opportunities to explore. If your plans include Rendsburg, then here are a few ideas to help you enjoy everything this community has to offer.

The Main Sight To See in Rendsburg Is the Railroad Bridge

Because the canal cuts through Rendsburg like a knife, it made it difficult for railroad traffic to move through the area. The whole purpose of the canal was to bring in heavy shipping traffic, which meant tall boats would be using the canal. The solution? The construction of a railroad bridge in 1913 that was 40 meters tall and over 2,500 meters long. This makes it the longest railway bridge in Europe and to make it even more unique, a transporter bridge also traverses the canal.

What is a transporter bridge? Imagine having a ferry system that wasn’t a boat, but was instead a road platform that was suspended from the railroad bridge above. That’s what you’ll find at the Rendsburg bridge and it runs on the quarter of an hour. It covers 125 meters in just 90 seconds, but only holds four cars at a time. There were only 20 or so transporter bridges ever built and only about a dozen are still in operation today.

If being above the water isn’t exactly your cup of tea, then you might also enjoy the Kiel Canal Pedestrian Tunnel. It’s the largest pedestrian tunnel in the world and connects both sides of the canal just as the railroad bridge does. For another world record, you could enjoy a view of the Kiel Canal from the world’s longest bench, which is over 500 meters long and sits on the bank.

There’s a Beautiful 13th Century Church in Rendsburg As Well

Built in 1286, St. Mary’s Church in Rendsburg is worth a visit to see. The tall cathedral ceilings are reminiscent of some of the more famous churches that people flock to see every year throughout Europe. Adorned in white and with golden adornments, the church is still regularly used for worship services, meetings, and even concerts. The tower of the church was completed in 1579 and then the nave and tower were restored in the 19th century.

The epitaphs are beautiful and date back as early as 1604. The church is part of the Evangelical Lutheran congregation, although it was initially established as a Roman Catholic church. The oldest components of the church are the bronze baptismal font, which dates to the mid-14th century, and the crucifixion group which dates to the early 16th century. The pulpit is of the classic Renaissance style and the modern stained glass additions are beautiful as well.

Because religion is a dominant part of Rendsburg’s culture, you may also want to spend an afternoon exploring the Jewish Museum. It’s open from Tuesday – Sunday for just 5 hours in the afternoon each day, but you can set an appointment for a private tour if you wish. It’s the only Jewish museum that is north of Berlin and you’ll find it in the old Jewish quarters of the city. You’ll find a number of artifacts on display and there’s a new exhibit about Jewish identity that has become part of the permanent collection.

There Are Some Culinary Masterpieces To Find in Rendsburg As Well

Amidst all of the action near the waterfront, it might be easy to overlook a place like Torre Suda. This Italian restaurant has a street side entrance, but you’ll be taken down into the underground vaults for a unique dining experience. Surrounding by red brick, you’ll find that the prices are extremely affordable and there’s a wide selection of options to enjoy. We recommend the mozzarella caprese and the Vitello Tonnato especially.

Not far away is Zur Hauptwache, which is also located in the historic center of Rendsburg. The menu is centers around the large wood oven that is used to make most of the dishes in a building that was built in the late 17th century. If you arrive for an early dinner, you’ll get a 25% discount and there is a wide range of local and international items to enjoy. The gyros here are surprisingly good and you can’t go wrong with a wood-fired pizza either.

You might also enjoy what Adria has to offer if you’re looking for a more formal atmosphere. It’s more of a steakhouse than a gourmet or fine dining establishment, but what makes it unique is that the wine list is made up entirely of Croatian offerings. There are some fried dishes on the menu that are well-prepared, but sometimes you just should go with the filet just because it is consistently good! It’s located in the Hotel Rendsburg, so you may need to book your table in advance.

Are You Ready To Explore Rendsburg?

This community might not be on the map of many tourists, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a number of great places to explore and enjoy in this community. From casual and affordable dining options to elegance or the chance to enjoy something that is a world record, Rendsburg offers a unique way to relax and let the world pass you by. Include these ideas with your plans and you’ll be able to enjoy everything that this community has to offer!
