Rotorua likes to call itself “New Zealand’s coolest little hot spot.” It’s located in the Bay of Plenty region on the North Island and earns the nickname because of the high levels of geothermal activity which occur in the area. Sources by the Rotorua caldera, upon which the town lies, you’ll find mud pools and geysers are plentiful and fun to find.

You can also climb to the top of Mount Ngongotaha for a beautiful panorama of the region. A replica of the “Fabulous Las Vegas” sign sits at the summit, greeting visitors to “RotoVegas.”

If the Sulphur smell is too strong one day during your stay in Rotorua, then some indoor activities are in order. Try the Rotorua Museum of Art and History for an interesting tour of exhibits. Housed in a Tudor-style building, it once served as a bath house in the early 20th century. Reserve some time to enjoy activities on the lawn, including croquet, when the weather is nice.

For those who love a good challenge, there is a Class 5 whitewater course through a beautiful gorge to enjoy just 15 minutes northeast of the city.
