Travel to Sabah

Sabah is among the most captivating places in all of Malaysia, offering visitors unrivalled experiences in a wonderland of unspoiled tropical nature. It’s an adventure into the heart of the glorious tropics, one that will delight and inspire. From waters and land teeming with life, it truly is the best of Asia.

Sabah is the easternmost state of the Southeast Asian country of Malaysia and is located on the lush island of Borneo. It shares this large island landmass with neighbouring Sarawak state and two countries – the nation of Brunei and the large Kalimantan province belonging to Indonesia. Sabah holidays are an amazing experience for nature and wildlife lovers. The tropical scenery is spectacular and you can get right up close to some of the indigenous creatures, such as the extraordinary orangutan, which in Malay means ‘person of the jungle’ and is one of mankind’s closest relatives that’s only found on Borneo and Indonesia’s Sumatra island.

There are lots of great hotels in the Sabah capital, Kota Kinabalu, from mid-range right up to luxurious. International chain hotels have properties here, including resorts that have spas attached. The capital is a good place to stay if you’ve just flown in to Sabah, as Kota Kinabalu International Airport is only 8 km southwest of the city centre. There are also a number of budget hotels around the airport. Out around the state itself, there’s a range of Sabbah accommodation, including in such places as Lahad Datu in the east, Kota Marudu in the north and Sandakan on the northeast coast, among others.

What to see and do in Sabah ?

Temperatures in tropical Sabah are fairly constant throughout the year, at around 32C. The driest part of the year is from March to September, with the rainy season generally starting in October and running until February.

Mount Kinabalu in the north of the state is a good starting point on your Sabah holidays. It soars to 4,095 metres and is in Kinabalu Park, which has been designated a World Heritage Site. As mountain climbing goes, it’s relatively easy to scale this highest peak on the island of Borneo, although caution is required during the slippery rainy season.

Sipadan Island is just off the east coast of Sabah and is renowned as one of the best scuba diving sites in the world. A fast boat will get you there in about an hour, and once you arrive on this beautiful island you can take another boat out to the dive sites and marvel at the extraordinary diversity of its stunning marine life, which includes turtles, whitetip reef sharks and barracuda.

When in Sabah, make sure you visit your closest animal cousin, the fascinating and intelligent orangutan. One of the best places to see these curious creatures is at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre near the town of Sandakan on the northeast coast. The centre is in a rainforest and rehabilitates close to 100 orangutans at any one time; they’re not caged but allowed to roam freely.

There are so many other things to see and do in Sabah that you’ll hardly have time for it all. Do try and soak in the Poring Hot Springs, see the long-nosed proboscis monkeys and view the world’s largest flower, the Rafflesia
