Schleswig is in Northern Germany, sitting on an inlet that leads directly to the Baltic Sea. It separates the Angeln and Schwansen Peninsulas, creating a lowland area that is perfect for agricultural work. First mentioned in 804 AD, it would develop into one of the most powerful settlements in the region for more than two centuries.

You will also want to take the time to tour Schleswig Cathedral. Constructed in 1134, it is the home of the tomb of King Frederick I of Denmark. Despite its age, there is a certain Gothic influence in the construction of the Cathedral because it was completed in pieces. You can visit the nave that was built in 1200, while the main portion of the hall was finished around 1408.
Because of the water access, fishing was just as important as agriculture to the region. You can visit the old fishing village that is at the Schlei shore. The city was originally founded a bit south of the modern town, settled by the Vikings, and was called Hedeby. Its ruins can still be accessed as well.
