Search cheapest vacation in Aix-en-Provence
Experience charm itself in the perfect provincial town on your Aix-en-Provence vacation. Famous for being the home of Post-Impressionist painter, Paul Cezanne, Aix-en-Provence, or simply Aix, is quiet, small and clean with a lot to offer in high-variety shopping. Known for its gorgeous fountains as well as its beautiful landscape that glistens in gold during autumn, bursts with color in summer, and looks absolutely magical in winter, this French Riviera town is something out of a classical Disney movie.
Aix’s city center is a made up of narrow streets that meander around historical buildings and lead to paved plazas. It is a mostly pedestrian town, great for exploring on foot and easy for you to enjoy the atmosphere to the fullest. Stay near some of the many open-air markets in the area that complement the vast collection of fashion boutiques, perfumeries, and touristy souvenir shops. Enjoy a nice leisurely meal with some homegrown wine at one of the many café terraces just a stroll away and talk for hours as you dine. Move in slow motion in this relaxed, friendly and easygoing provincial town.
For such a small town, Aix-en-Provence has big culture. Follow the history of Aix by hopping from one beautiful fountain to the other. Start with the most ancient Espeluque fountain in the new archbishop square, which was placed there in 1756 after being relocated many times beforehand. Next, travel to the Fountain of the Four Dolphins in the heart of the Maazin quarter, which dates back to 1667 and sports four dolphins with their raised flippers on a bed of waves that support the obelisk. Graze through classical, multiple-shaped and terraced gardens that surround 17th and 18th century bastides, which are large houses that Aixois nobles and members of parliament stayed at in the heat of the summer season.
Take a break from the present and enjoy the current, living culture of the city. There are two major musical events held in Aix each year. In late June and July, a top-ranking opera festival, the Festival International d’Art Lyrique, is held and takes place in the outdoor Theatre de L’Archeveche, the newly built Grand Theatre de Provence, and the restored 18th century Theatre du Jeu de Paume. In early June, to coincide with the national Fete de la Musique, Aix hosts the Musique dans la Rue or the “Music in the Street” and a week of classical jazz and street concerts are held around the city.
Plenty of museums populate the town and one must-visit is the L’atelier Cezanne, which is located on the northern outskirts of Aix and built around Paul Cezanne’s studio, which has been kept exactly the same since the painter’s death. To the east of Aix is the famous Montagne Sainte-Victoir, which is accessible from Aix by car or by foot, taking Escrachou Pevou, a wood footpath to the plateau of Bibemus.
While not a big city, the nightlife in Aix-en-Provence is pretty lively. La Rotonde is a popular bar among tourists and locals where you will find men in suit jackets and women dolled-up, jiving over drinks.
