Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, known for its Mediterranean beaches, fabulous architecture and nightlife, is the second largest city in Spain after Madrid. After hosting the Olympic Games in 1992, Barcelona went through a major period of change, where facilities were modernized and the city in general has since become much more popular as a vacation destination. The city is known for its fine art, the architecture of Antoni Gaudí, including the famous, still incomplete Sagrada Familia basilica, and its great nightlife and open spaces. Old Barcelona can be very romantic, but the city is also a good family destination.
Barcelona is divided into five main districts; the most popular for visitors, and the most centrally located, are the Eixample and the Ciutat Vella – Catalan for “old city” -, sometimes called Barceloneta, the oldest part of the city. The Ciutat Vella houses the famous La Rambla street, the city’s best shopping area, and La Ribera, a lively neighborhood with many 15th century buildings, small shops with clothing from local designers, and a great bar and restaurant scene. Eixample is home to the University of Barcelona, Spain’s premiere University, and the Sagrada Familia, Barcelona’s most famous architectural structure.
Barcelona is the city that comes to mind when most of us imagine Spain – beautiful beaches, stunning, colorful architecture, amazing nightlife, a wealth of art and culture, great food and a warm, fun populace. While Barcelona is Madrid’s rival, in soccer as well as politically, it’s also a culturally very different place. Where Madrid is traditional, Barcelona is edgy; from fashion to mannerisms, visitors find Barcelona to be much more casual, and for some people more inviting, than the capital.
No trip to Barcelona is complete without a tour of Antoni Gaudí’s works; the Sagrada Familia is the best known, but the Parc Guëll should not be missed – it’s a sprawling urban park full of wondrous architectural features, and one of the largest architectural works in southern Europe. Tiled mosaics, bizarre, colonnaded walkways coming from the hillside, and other marvels await the visitor here. It’s a fascinating experience that should not be missed.
Another must-see attraction is the Picasso Museum in La Ribera. The Picasso Museum gives the visitor an excellent understanding of Picasso’s formative years, most of which were spent in Barcelona. In this museum, you can trace the entire development of Picasso’s style, by looking at landscapes he did as a 14 year-old to prints or originals of his later, abstract works. It’s truly exceptional, and fans of Picasso’s earlier works can view a collection here unequaled by any other museum in the world. La Ribera is also home to several pristine examples of Catalan Gothic Architecture, like the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar.
La Rambla is the city’s main artery – it’s like the Champs-Elysée or 5th Avenue of Barcelona, and bisects the city center. It crosses from the harbor to La Plaça Catalunya, running through the Ciutat Vella like a spine. Come here to see the street performers jump out at unsuspecting tourists, hear excellent performances by street musicians, visit the flower and pet stalls, or enjoy some of the best people-watching in Spain (or anywhere, for that matter).
