Search cheapest vacation in Bari
How do you get the cheapest tickets to Bari ?
For years Bari has been used as a kind of glorified transport terminal, with Italians and vacationers alike stopping over to take the ferry out to other islands and countries on the Mediterranean. But this charming seaside city with its centuries of history and vibrant culture is most definitely worth a trip itself, as more and more visitors are starting to discover. On your Bari vacation you’ll be able to tour medieval castles, explore ancient basilicas, sample some of the best food in all of Italy and, of course, spend some time by the sea.
Like any other city, Bari is made up of several distinct neighborhoods, each with its own unique personality. The old town is the ancient heart of the city, and the ideal place to spend your Bari vacation if you want to be close to all of the main sights. The Murat neighborhood in the south of the city is home to the beautiful promenade, where you can stroll along the water and admire the city in the sunshine. Downtown Bari is filled with piazzas lines with restaurants, shops cafes and bars where you can spend lazy days enjoying the local cuisine and people watching.
A Bari vacation is worth the trip for the food alone. Puglia boasts some of the best wheat, olive oil and wine in the entire country, which is really saying something when you’re talking about Italy. You’ll be treated to some of the freshest pasta of your life: orecchiette, pasta al forno and cavatelli are some of the local specialties. The bread is outright amazing; everything from the simplest pane e pomodoro to the delicious calzoni and focaccia the city is famous for is a mouth-watering delight.
Naturally, Bari also boasts some amazing seafood dishes, and you’ll be able to top your feast off with a glass of regional wine. Although you might want to spend your entire Bari vacation sampling endless incredible dishes at the countless open-air restaurants and cafes and overlooking the sea, you should spend at least a little time exploring some of the capital’s stunning historical sites.
The 11th-century Basilica of Saint Nicholas is more than just a visually stunning cathedral; it is an important pilgrimage destination for Catholics and Orthodox Christians from all over the world. This church was constructed specifically to house the remains of St. Nicholas, better known today as Santa Claus. You’ll find little trace of jolly old Saint Nick in this centuries-old Byzantine basilica, although it is home to some incredible sculptures, paintings and mosaics.
The unique Swabian Castle looks particularly out of place in this southern Italian city; it was in fact built by the Norman King Roger II way back in the 12th century. Today the castle houses different art exhibitions and a stroll along its ancient ramparts offer some incredible views of the sea and city.
Don’t leave Bari without spending some time in the sun of the famous Pane e Pomodoro Beach, where you can work on your tan, splash in the water, and enjoy a nice gelato.
