What to see and do in Budapest ?

No visit to Budapest would be complete without a trip to one of its world-renowned spas. One of the reasons the Romans decided to establish a settlement near the modern-day city was so they could make us of the thermal springs. The ruins of those first baths built by the Romans are still there, but the famous baths of Budapest today were developed during the period of Turkish occupation and the capital gained its reputation “city of spas” in the early 20th century.

There are dozens of beautiful baths for you to explore, but most famous is the Széchenyi Baths. One of the largest bathing complexes in all Europe, the indoor pools there date from 1913 and offer a variety of medical and spa treatments amidst an atmosphere of such grandeur you will feel as though you’ve been transported back to the glory days of the Renaissance.

Remains from all the different eras of the capital’s long and colorful past are still visible throughout the city, and you should spend at least some part of your Budapest vacation exploring them. The haunting Roman ruins in the open-air museum at Aquincum are the perfect place to wander and learn on a sunny day. Of course, it would be a shame to leave without visiting the famous Buda Castle which dominates the city’s skyline. This incredible medieval structure also contains the Hungarian National Gallery and History Museum within its walls, so you can learn all about the nation’s past while enjoying the incredible views of the Danube the castle has to offer.

The House of Terror is a unique museum dedicated to a darker chapter of Budapest’s history. Housed in the building that served as Nazi headquarters during the Second World War, the House of Terror features exhibits about the fascist and communist regimes in Hungary during the last century, as well as a moving memorial to their victims, many of whom were imprisoned and killed in the very same building.

You can combine history and Budapest’s famous café culture and cuisine by stopping in at any one of the city’s quaint cafes and restaurants overlooking the beautiful blue Danube, some of which are more than a century old. Dine at world-famous Mátyás Pince restaurant for an evening filled with live gypsy music and delicious traditional Hungarian food amongst the beautifully decorated historic frescoes and stained glass. The 164-year old Café Gerbeaud is just as beautifully decorated and has some of the best confections and coffee in all of Europe.
