According to legend, Krakow was founded when the mythical king Krakus slew a mighty dragon in his cave on the banks of the Vistula and established the city. You can still visit the dragon’s lair today, and as you descend the hidden steps from Wawel castle you might just wonder if the story is true after all. The city itself certainly looks like the setting for a fairytale; having miraculously survived the war intact, on your Krakow vacation you’ll be able to explore some of the most beautifully preserved medieval buildings in all of Europe.
You certainly won’t have a lack of amazing places to stay in your Krakow vacation. The medieval Old Town encircled by a beautiful green park is home to many of the city’s most important historic buildings, including the Market Square, Royal Road and basilica, in addition to a number of fantastic pubs, restaurants and nightclubs. Ancient Wawel on the banks of the Vistula is even older than the Old Town, and where you’ll find the Royal Castle and lair of the dragon himself. Kazimierz, the city’s famous Jewish district, is another trove of historical treasures, as well as student bars and pubs.
Having served as the royal capital for 500 years of its 750 year history, it’s no surprise that this Polish city is a veritable treasure trove of cultural, architectural and artistic gems. Having miraculously survived the Second World War largely intact, today Krakow is home to the largest collection of artwork and historic buildings in the country.
The best way to get a taste of the city’s former royal grandeur on your Krakow vacation is walking down the entire Royal Way starting from St. Florian’s Gate and ending at Wawel Castle. This stunning Renaissance palace was the center of Polish politics for centuries; today it is a museum where you can tour the state rooms, former royal apartments, and royal gardens, as well as take a look at the crown jewels.
No castle worth its salt would be complete without a few secret passages, and if you follow the one at the foot of the Thieves ‘Tower you’re in for a special treat. Krakow’s castle is the only one in the world that comes equipped with its own dragon, and if you’re adventurous enough you can visit the caves he made his home in under the castle. You might feel like you’ve wandered into a Tolkien tale as you wind your way down the stone steps and through the twisting chambers of the Dragon’s Den to emerge on the banks of the Vistula with some stunning views of the city.
Don’t think all of Krakow’s attractions are rooted in the past: the city’s nightlife is famous throughout Europe. There are supposedly more than 300 bars in the Old Town alone, and their proximity makes it an ideal bar-hopping location. The Krawl Through Krakow is becoming legendary in its own right, and is a fun and safe way to get to know a different side of the city. Many of the bars are located in underground cellars, which only adds to the city’s air of mystery, but in the summer the nightlife centers around Krakow’s countless beer gardens and outdoor cafes.
