Fez

Fez Travel Wiki Travel to Fez Many people visit Morocco and instantly think of Casablanca, which is a shame because Fez is such an incredibly city in its own right. It's the third largest in the country, home to over 1 million people, and has two old medinas. The Fes el Bali is even listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is believed by many to be the largest car-free urban area in the world. The oldest continually functioning madrasa,...

How do you get the cheapest tickets to Fez ?

If you’ve ever wanted to experience all the magic and mystery of the past combined with the luxury and comforts of the present, a Fez vacation is the perfect trip for you. Also known as Fes, this ancient walled city with its tiny winding streets and lack of cars will make you feel like you’ve walked into one of Scheherazade’s tales. You can visit the world’s oldest university, rejuvenate at the beautiful baths, and then head back out to watch the sunset and enjoy a delicious meal of Moroccan delights. A Fez vacation combines centuries of history, romance and adventure into one unforgettable trip.

There are plenty of great places for you to stay during your Fez vacation. The ancient heart of the city is the medina; you enter this neighborhood through the stunning tiled Bab Bou Jeloud gate and can explore the winding streets and alleys for hours. In the Fez el-Jdid neighborhood you can browse through the dozens of tiny markets and vendor stalls and haggle with craftsmen over the prices of goods they’ve been making in much the same way as they did 500 years ago. The French Ville Nouvelle quarter has a distinctly European feel to it with its wide boulevards and squares lined with open-air cafes.

You’ll certainly have plenty of historic sites to explore on your Fez vacation. This ancient city is a veritable treasure trove of centuries-old buildings, monuments and traditions.

The fourteenth-century Madrasa Bou Inania is a stunning example of Islamic architecture. One of the most important religious institutions in all of Morocco, it is also open to non-Islamic visitors, something of a rarity for religious buildings in this city. As you wander through the sunlit courtyards and stare up and the mosaic-covered arches and minaret, you’ll feel transported back into the days of the sultans.

In fact, this entire walled city seems as though it were frozen in time. Most of the buildings in Fez’s center date from the 13th and 14th centuries, and the absence of cars only adds to the sensation you’ve leapt back in history a few centuries. You’ll have to dodge pack animals with their wares as you traverse the city’s cobblestone paths, most of them headed to the many open-air bazaars that seem to have changed little over the course of Fez’s nearly 1300 years of history. The Chouara and Sidi Moussa tanneries have been practicing their trade since the Middle Ages, and you can watch the heirs of this medieval business ply their craft from the overlooking terraces.

The University of al-Karaouine claims to be the oldest on the planet, and its physical beauty make it a must-see on your Fez vacation. The school has been in continual operation since 859, when it was first founded as a mosque. Its seemingly endless sea of arches, stunning tiled courtyards with their gushing fountains, and beautiful paintings will make you wish you were a student there yourself.

Before you leave make sure you climb up to one of the rooftop terraces in the old city and watch the sun sink below the horizon, bathing the stunning ancient capital in an orange glow.

Food Morocco, Local Dishes

Morocco has an interesting local kitchen. Below you can see some of the local dishes you maybe would like to try during a vacation. One of the things you should try when travelling around the world is absolutely the local food. Generally you should be able to eat exactly the same as the locals - off course, if the streets are littered with dead bodies, then maybe it is worth to think twice before ordering some local food. It is easy...
