If you’re looking for a reason to take a Guadalajara vacation, consider this: the city is the tequila capital of the world. That’s right, over 60 million gallons of the beverage are produced in the region’s blue-green agave fields. If a tequila tour isn’t enough to tempt you, there are plenty of other fantastic attractions sure to delight you. Serenades by live mariachi bands, real-life matadors standing down raging bulls, stunning baroque architecture and a vibrant nightlife are only a few other things this fantastic city has to offer. No matter how you choose to spend it, a Guadalajara vacation is a guaranteed delight.
Since Guadalajara is such a large city, there are plenty of different places for you to stay, each with its own unique flavor. The centro storico is perfect if you want to be within a short distance of all the main historic sites, including the cathedral. If you want to feel more like a local on your Guadalajara vacation, stay in the Tlaquepaque area. This “old town” neighborhood is home to the ceramics museum and arts and crafts center, as well as some fantastic bars, restaurants and clubs. Being an important shopping district, it’s also the perfect place to pick up a souvenir.
You’ll be spending most of your Guadalajara vacation in the centro historico: the historical heart of the city. The cathedral which dominates the neighborhood’s skyline dates back to the colonial period and is definitely worth a visit, particularly to see Bartolomé Esteban Murillo’s stunning mural “The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin.”
The cathedral stands in the center of the Plaza of the Four Crosses, so after you visit you can stroll down any one of these pleasant plazas and admire the baroque architecture while you grab a bite to eat from a food vendor. The Governor’s Palace is another important historic building, famous for its incredible murals painted by José Clemente Orozco, one of Mexico’s most famous artists of all time.
If you need a break from the sun, pop in the Museo Regional de Guadalajara, where you can learn all about the region’s history dating back to prehistory: the mammoth skeleton is a must-see for younger visitors. Kids will also enjoy a trip to the Parque Agua Azul, a lush park featuring an aviary, butterfly enclosure, and open-air concerts. If you want a true Guadalajara experience, visit the Mercado Libertad, the largest open-air market in Latin America. It’s the perfect place to buy a unique souvenir and boasts an amazing food court where you can sample local favorites like birria and pozole.
Another authentic Guadalajara experience is a trip Plaza de los Mariachis where the famous “Mexican Hat Dance” was invented. It is a favorite haunt of mariachi bands who will serenade you while you eat at one of the many outdoor cafes and restaurants that line the square. Guadalajara also offers the opportunity to see a real live bullfight at its ring, although this spectacle is not for the faint of heart. If you’d prefer a less active thrill, take a night tour through the spooky Belen Cemetery where you’ll be regaled with local folklore and ghost stories in this centuries-old burial ground.
