Search cheapest vacation in Hamburg
As the second largest city in Germany, Hamburg’s busy harbor life is a major tourist destination for domestic and international travelers alike. With many of its buildings destroyed in World War II, Hamburg is rebuilt today with a mix of modern architecture and historical buildings reflecting the modernity of our world. The harbor serves as the heart of the city and is known as Germany’s ‘Gateway to the World’. Many tourist attractions focus on the city’s maritime lifestyle; tours of the harbor, waterways, and canals are done aboard ferries and pleasure boats.
This city in Northern Germany has many areas for you to stay. The four quarters between the Alster lakes to the north and the harbor and Elbe River to the south are quite popular. They are: St. Georg, the cultural district; Altstadt or Old City, the historic district; Neustadt or New City; and St. Pauli which includes the Reeperbahn, Hamburg’s famous red light district. The finest hotels are located in Central Hamburg, the main commercial and shopping area but there are many hotels in the other districts. Try out HafenCity, a new quarter with multiple hotels, shops, offices, museums, and residential areas.

Attractions and Sightseeing tour in Hamburg
Hamburg’s attractions reflect its harbor and maritime history. Start your tour of one of the world’s largest working harbors with a boat tour from the pier. Visit “Rickmer Rickmers”, an old sailing ship built in 1896. Walk on the cobblestone alleys to the historical warehouse district and see 100 years old red brick warehouses and mansions and sailor taverns that have been converted to museums and restaurants.
Although many medieval buildings in downtown Hamburg were destroyed during a huge fire in 1842 and World War II, the City has reconstructed historic mansions and landmarks. Notable among these buildings is the 647-room City Hall. Another popular historic landmark is the Church St. Michaelis. The over 300 feet high platform offers a fabulous 360 degree view of Hamburg. Also in downtown are two major boulevards, the Jungfernstieg and Mönckebergstrasse, lined with luxury shops.
The “Ballinstadt” Museum has the database of over five million people who immigrated to the New World from Hamburg. See if your ancestors traveled through Hamburg on the way to their journey.
Take a cruise on the Alster Lake. These cruises offer visitors a view of villas on the shores of the lake. Hamburg also has many parks and is known to be the greenest city in Europe.
Do not miss an afternoon visit to a Konditorei or pastry shop for a slice of cake and a cup of coffee, a traditional pastime since the 17th century when coffee beans were first imported to Germany. There are numerous German cakes to choose from, many of which are regional and seasonal, with fresh fruits in the summer and spiced in the winter.
Adults can take a trip to the Reeperbahn, Hamburg’s Red Light District that was initially established for the sailors who came to port. Today, it is lined with numerous restaurants, theatres, bars, and clubs. In the 1960s, the Beatles played in two of these clubs, the Indra Club and the Kaiserkellerare.
