Calling all Hoosiers and sports fans, head over to Indianapolis for your next great vacation! Indianapolis is the capital of Indiana, located in the Midwestern United States. As a major sports town, Indianapolis is best known as the home of the world’s most famous car race, the Indy 500. Its major league games, featuring the Indianapolis Colts, Indiana Pacers, or Indiana Fever, are also incredibly popular pastimes for visitors. However, the city offers more to its guests than just sports. It has something for everyone including historic landmarks, an excellent Children’s Museum, parks, hiking trails, and the Indianapolis Zoo.
Indianapolis has distinct neighborhoods with fantastic hotels scattered all over the city. Staying in the downtown area facilitates city sightseeing and visiting historic attractions. Several bed-and-breakfasts are located inside rustic 20th century Victorian mansions. For a more relaxed environment, hotels in the Northside provide convenient access to the suburban shopping malls and restaurants. For those who want to mix business with pleasure, stay near the Indianapolis International Airport, which is just a few minutes drive away from the downtown area. Sports enthusiasts can stay at hotels near the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Bankers Life Fieldhouse, or the Lucas Oil Stadium; you have plenty of options to choose from in Indianapolis.
Begin your Indianapolis vacation with a visit to two patriotic landmarks, the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Monument at Monument Circle and the Indiana War Memorial Plaza. Looking at the monuments makes you feel proud of your country and its servicemen. The Indiana War Memorial Plaza Historic District contains 24 acres of monuments, statues, sculptures, and fountains, two museums, and three parks.
Move on to the cobblestoned streets of Lockerbie Square, a historic residential district. Walk along restored 19th century homes and visit the home of American writer and poet, James Whitcomb Riley. Other areas downtown are Fountain Square, for unique restaurants, art galleries, entertainment, antiques; Broad Ripple, for quaint boutiques, art galleries, sidewalk cafes, restaurants, and nightlife amidst a background of public art, graffiti murals, and beautiful greenways and parks; and Mass Ave., the theater and arts district.
There are many things to do at the Canal and White River State Park district. Along the 3-mile Canal Walk, take a relaxing stroll or energetic run or bike ride or ride a pedal boat or gondola. Enjoy an outdoor concert. Visit the Indiana State Museum, Indiana History Center, and the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians.
For families with children, visit the Indianapolis Zoo and the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, the largest children’s museum in the world. Exhibits include “dinosphere” fossils and National Geographic Treasures of the Earth. Take the kids to Conner Prairie Living History Museum and see volunteers dressed in period-costumes, reenacting prairie life.
Not to be missed is the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the largest stadium of its kind and holds the Indy 500, Brickyard 400, and the NHRA U.S. Nationals. When there are no races, visitors can take bus tours of the track. Sports enthusiasts can see historic vehicles on display at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame.
