Search cheapest vacation in Innsbruck
If you’ve ever wanted to visit an honest-to-goodness winter wonderland, then an Innsbruck vacation is the perfect trip for you. With its idyllic mountain setting, this city nestled in the Alps has lost none of its imperial charm. Although its main draw is its winter sports, Innsbruck is full of cultural and historical treasures waiting to be discovered. When you’re not swishing down the slopes you can explore the beautiful palaces, castles, museums and churches housed within the city, all testament to Innsbruck’s past imperial grandeur.
No matter which of the city’s neighborhoods you choose to stay in on your Innsbruck vacation, you are guaranteed an unforgettable time. The Altstadt is the historic heart of the city, home of the famous Golden Roof built by Emperor Maximilian I as a gift to his new bride. The Hofburg palace and cathedral are also located in this neighborhood, as are numerous shops, restaurants and cafes. Pradl and Saggen offer a quiet retreat from the bustle of the city center; the Hofgarten park is perfect for a relaxing stroll not matter which time of year you visit.
You’ll immediately understand why the city is one of the three which has twice hosted the Winter Olympics on your Innsbruck vacation. Its nickname the “Capital of the Alps” should be a giveaway: this charming Austrian town nestled in the mountains is the ideal location for winter sports. Beginners and experts alike take advantage of the stunning slopes skiing and snowboarding all winter and mountaineering and hiking in the summer. Kids can take a spin on one of the city’s ice skating rinks; the picturesque backdrop of the Alps only lend to the atmosphere of a veritable winter wonderland. Less athletically-inclined visitors can opt for a ride in a toboggan or simply admire the breathtaking scenery.
When you tire of the mountains, take some time to explore the remnants of Innsbruck’s Imperial Past. Ambras Castle looks like it was lifted straight out of a fairy tale and is home to several museums founded by King Ferdinand in the 16th century. The Chamber of Art and Curiosities is the only collection of its kind in Europe that has remained in its original location and not been plundered since its inception nearly five hundred years ago. The Chamber features a number of unusual and unique objects and portraits, including one of the infamous Vlad the Impaler -the ruthless Romanian ruler who served as the inspiration for Dracula.
If you want to combine history with fresh air, take a stroll in the Hofgarten, the court garden that is now a protected park. Some of the trees there were personally planted by Empress Marie Therese, mother of the doomed French queen Marie Antoinette. The park contains a playground for children, a palm house which features various sculpture exhibitions, as well as a concert pavilion that has been in use since the 1700s and a popular restaurant.
