Search cheapest vacation in La Paz
La Paz is a beautiful mountain metropolis. Nestled in the Andean Mountains, La Paz is surrounded by snow-covered peaks all year long. Towering skyscrapers compete with the peaks until the horizon is a jagged display of vertical geometry. Busy city streets bustle with action, as La Paz is both the seat of Bolivia’s government and one of its main cultural and economic centers. From beautiful parks to ornate theaters to modern restaurants, La Paz vacations offer a wide array of cosmopolitan delights.
La Paz has grown from a small outpost to a major city, and buildings have steadily crawled up the mountain until the highest reaches of the city sit at about 13,500 feet. Incredible views can be found throughout La Paz, with each neighborhood providing its own special vantage point. Whether you’re admiring the historic homes of Sopocachi or browsing the shops of Downtown, you’ll be more than satisfied by your La Paz vacation. No matter where you stay, Bolivia’s food, music, clothing, and color will leave an unforgettable mark on your heart.
La Paz has incredible museums that draw thousands of visitors each year. Smaller institutions display everything from local crafts like blanket-weaving and woodwork to painting and sculpture. The National Museum of Archeology showcases a variety of artifacts from the Tiwanaku Empire, one of South America’s greatest pre-Colombian civilizations. The Natural History Museum houses exhibits on local plant and animal life. Most museums can be found on Jaen Street, one of the oldest in the city.
Many annual events bring guests from all over South America to La Paz. One of the largest, the Alasitas, is a month-long event, held to honor a Tiwanaku god, Ekeko, who brings abundance and prosperity. The festivities are marked by the sharing of miniature objects that are supposed to presage a full-sized gift later in the year. This festival combines both pre-Colombian and Christian religious traditions in an incredible and rich cultural synthesis.
La Paz vacations are replete with opportunities for shopping and dining that showcases local skill. From the stores on Sagarnaga Street to the crazy items of the Witches’ Market, there’s no shortage of possible souvenirs. Every Thursday and Sunday, a massive market is held in the El Alto district, with everything from movies to used clothes on sale, all for incredibly low prices.
If you’re a fan of golf, the La Paz Golf Club is a must. It bears the distinction of being the world’s highest green, and its easily one of earth’s most exotic courses. You’ll be able to work on your swing and drink in the fresh mountain air with snow-covered peaks on the horizon.
No visit to Bolivia would be complete without experiencing Andean music. The powerful chants, soaring melodies, and traditional instrumentation typical of the genre can be heard in many of La Paz’s music clubs. It’s a necessary part of every La Paz vacation.
