Situated on the Meuse River, Maastricht is one of the Netherlands most beautiful cities. With an overwhelming sense of history pervading through the city streets and stunning architecture, Maastricht is a great place to delve into Dutch culture. Charming city squares share the cityscape with fortifications dating back nearly a millennium. Beautiful parks contribute green space to a city of church spires and windmills, adding to the peaceful aura felt by all who visit.
Maastricht vacations are full of accommodation options, starting with its many distinct city divisions. The five official districts each exude a unique atmosphere. Maastricht Centrum houses many of the city’s most popular destinations, including the central square, many great shopping centers, and towering churches. The southwest district includes many national monuments; many of them buildings with stunning yet delicate architecture. The northeast district is known for the largest single discovery of Celtic gold and silver treasure, which was buried in a field.
One of Maastricht’s most famous and popular sites is Valkenburg aan de Geul. This region houses two amusement parks, castle ruins, a casino, and more. Visitors enjoy cycling tours both above and below-ground, as well as cable car rides. However, the streets are so beautiful and lively that simply walking around is enough to feel satisfied at the end of the day.
The Vrijthof, Maastricht’s city center, is one of Europe’s most famous. The Vrijthof contains two stunning churches, one sandstone with a red tower, the other built in stunning Romanesque fashion. There’s no better time to visit than during Carnival, when the city is full of costumed revelers from dusk till dawn.
The countryside surrounding Masstricht are home to the some of Netherlands’ finest vineyards, some of which date back to the days of Rome. The picturesque Jeker Valley is a great place to bike or drive, as the Jeker River curves lazily through fields of green. Many vineyards are more than open to guest tastings, and feature some of Holland’s best wines.
Maastricht is also known for its amazing shopping districts. The Binnenstad, located near the city center, is full of high-end stores, amazing restaurants, and pubs. Binnenstad shopping centers have achieved international recognition, and are best enjoyed from inside. People watching from the sidewalk is also enjoyable, with plenty of color and action livening up the day. Markt, the Market Square, was recently brought up to 21st century standards, and also includes the historic Town Hall.
One of Maastricht’s most romantic offerings is a cruise down the Meuse River. Boats float down the river, providing guests with gorgeous views of city landmarks. Some tours offer the option of stopping at a bakery, winery, or eating brunch on board. There’s no better way to explore the city’s culinary scene than from the water.
