Most people take island vacations to enjoy a tropical trip. Madeira may not have the heat and undiluted sunshine of the Caribbean, but the “Island of Eternal Spring” is no less alluring. Never too hot and never too cold, this gorgeous destination with its flowers and greenery in full bloom year-round is a wonderful alternative to the tropical sun. On you Madeira vacation you’ll be able to combine beach, mountains and cities in one fantastic trip. The astounding natural beauty, beautiful waters of the Atlantic, friendly locals, delicious cuisine, and, of course, exquisite Madeira wine will guarantee you an unforgettable vacation.
You’ll have an abundance of choices of places to stay on your Madeira vacation. The capital city of Funchal is one of the most beautiful in the entire country. It is a treasure trove of historic and cultural attractions to explore, including the 15-th century Sé Cathedral and Santa Clara convent. The bustling outdoor market Mercado Dos Lavradores is the best place to try the freshest fish and local fruits like bananas and mangos, and the city also boasts a wide variety of restaurants where you can try Madeira seafood specialities such as espada com banana and bacalhau com natas.
Madeira is known as the “Garden of the Atlantic” because of its incredibly lush natural scenery. Although the beach is the biggest draw for most visitors, you’d do well to spend some time exploring the greenery further inland on your Madeira vacation. The ingenious canal system ensures flowers are blooming throughout the year on the island, and they also make for great paths to guide you as you explore the mountains. The nature reserve of Ponta de São Lourenço on the eastern side of Madeira offers some spectacular views of the Atlantic and intriguing volcanic rock formations. You can end your hike at the popular Prainha beach, the island’s only natural black-sand beach, which is excellent for swimming.
Naturally the island is perfect for water sports as well. If you don’t want to spend your time in the beach just relaxing in the sun, try your hand at snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, or even surfing. Madeira is also known for its big game fishing since its waters are home to such a wide variety of species, including blue fin tuna, white marlin, albacore and even swordfish. Dolphins and whales also frequent the waters around the island, so take a whale-watching excursion to try and catch a glimpse of these friendly sea creatures.
When you tire of the outdoors, you’ll have no shortage of restaurants and bars in the towns and cities to amuse yourself in. It would be a sin to leave the island without trying a glass of Madeira wine, and the local cuisine is equally delectable. Don’t pass up this chance to enjoy some of the freshest seafood you’ll ever have or the delicious espetada meat dish that is marinated in Madeira wine. The traditional bolo de mel pastries are made from molasses on the island, and are the perfect way to end your meal.
