Although it is the world-famous Birthplace of Rock and Roll, it’s not only music-lovers who should take advantage of a Memphis vacation. Besides its countless live music venues, delicious barbeque restaurants, and historic sites, the Tennessee city boasts plenty of other amazing attractions all types of visitors can enjoy, be they young honeymooners, families with children, or anyone in between. There’s no other city where you can watch the famous march of the Peabody Ducks, take a ride down the mighty Mississippi on a historic steamboat, or visit the home of the King of Rock and Roll himself.

Memphis boasts several unique neighborhoods you can choose to stay in on your vacation, each with its own distinct flavor. Central Downtown is the heart of the city’s nightlife and contains the world-famous Beale Street. You’ll have no shortage of restaurants, bars and clubs to choose from, all within a few minutes’ walk of each other. The South Main Historic Arts district has a slightly more laidback vibe, but also features dozens of hip restaurants, galleries and music venues, as well as a farmers’ market. The quiet University District is the perfect place to escape from the hustle and bustle of downtown, as well as take advantage of one of the three golf courses in the area.

There is, of course, one main attraction that draws people to a Memphis vacation: the music. The Birthplace of Rock and Roll is also the home of many other different musical genres, including soul, blues, and gospel. Naturally there are endless venues to enjoy live performances of every different type of music under the sun. Experience music history first hand by taking a tour of Sun Studio, the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum, or the Gibson Guitar Factory. You can even visit the home of the King himself at Graceland.

The influences of music legends such as Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Otis Reading can still be seen and felt today when you take a walk down Beale Street at night. The street is a National Historic Landmark as well as the heart of the city’s nightlife, featuring three blocks of nightclubs, restaurants and bars with blues, jazz and rock ‘n’ roll spilling out onto the streets from every venue.

Memphis is also famous for its food, and you should not leave sampling some world-famous barbecue in one of the over 100 barbeque restaurants in the city. Of course, there is no shortage of other dining options available as well, with top restaurants featuring cuisine ranging in everything from Italian to Thai. Craft beer has recently become very popular in the city, so be sure to sample a cold local brew at one of the small breweries in town.

The Birthplace of Rock and Roll also boasts tons of kid-friendly activities as well. The interactive Fire Museum of Memphis features a life-size fire truck children can sit and play in. Be sure not to miss the famous March of the Peabody Ducks that takes place every day at 11 am when the Peabody Duckmaster leads his birds from the penthouse to the lobby fountain, and again at 5pm when he leads them back. A ride through the city on a vintage trolley is something the whole family can enjoy, besides being a fun way to learn about Memphis history.
