Search cheapest vacation in Paris
Often called the City of Lights or the City of Love, Paris is the capital of France and the most popular tourist destination in the world. Home to some of the world’s most iconic landmarks, from the Arc de Triomphe in the west to the famous Père-Lachaise Cemetery in the east. For art lovers, the museums of Paris offer something for everyone. Only Tokyo has more Michelin rated restaurants, making Paris a popular vacation spot for food lovers as well. For romance, fashion, art, culture and fine dining, Paris is the place to be.
No matter where you stay in Paris, the métro (subway system) makes it very easy to get around. The Arc de Triomphe, at the Place Charles de Gaulle, is perfectly located in the heart of western Paris, close to the Grands Boulevards and right at the lower end of the famous Champs Élysées, the hottest destinations for shoppers. In walking distance is the Eiffel tower, a beautiful location next to Paris’s most visited and recognizable monument. To the west lies the ultra-modern business district La Défense, home to the famous Grande Arche and conveniently located on the 1 metro line.
High fashion, museums, luxurious night-life, beautiful public gardens, jazz bars, historic architecture, and a history dating back almost 2000 years – with all these features, it’s not hard to see why Paris is the most visited city in the world. Simply walking along the Seine carries the visitor on a magical journey, through different eras of Parisian history. From Louis XIV to Voltaire, Napoleon to Picasso, it’s amazing to think of all the historical figures that have walked these streets.
Paris is the ideal vacation spot for a romantic getaway. Fine dining, good wine, beautiful architecture, and Paris’s rich cultural attractions, from dance clubs and live music to museums, make it the perfect spot for passion. While the Louvre is incredibly impressive, many tourists fail to look into the many rotating art exhibits and other museums, like the Musée de l’Orangerie, dedicated to impressionist painting and set in a beautiful building right in the Jardin des Tuileries. There are English-language papers and websites that contain a wealth of information about what’s going on in Paris.
The best times to visit the city are normally the spring, which is often rainy but not generally too cold, and May is usually one of the sunnier months in Paris. It’s also just before the real beginning of the tourist season, making it easier to see major attractions before they become crowded. The fall is also particularly beautiful.
Transportation is convenient, and most Parisians take the metro everywhere. The city also has an excellent bus system. Parking in the city is very difficult, so it isn’t recommended to come to rent a car, and isn’t necessary.
Another must-see attraction just outside of Paris is Louis XIV’s crowning achievement, the palace at Versailles. You can reach it by train within an hour from the Chatelet station in the center of Paris, and no visit to Paris is complete without seeing this milestone of Classical architecture and aristocratic excess.
