This Portuguese city may not be the best-known Atlantic destination, but you should book your Porto vacation before this well-kept secret gets out. A veritable treasure trove of cultural, artistic and culinary delights, Porto is quickly becoming a popular choice for young travelers from all around the world. It’s easy to understand why: the gorgeous climate, warm people and stunning historic architecture serve as the perfect setting for the city’s world-famous culture scene. The numerous galleries, museums, concert spaces and musical halls housed in the city provide endless diversions during the day, and the nightlife is just as entertaining.
You’ll be able to choose from a number of different places to stay on your Porto vacation. The historic neighborhood of Ribeira overlooking the river is particularly charming. Known as “The Soul of Porto,” its medieval streets and colorful houses facing the riverfront also make it one of the most picturesque spots in the city. You can sit in one of the many outdoor restaurants, bars and cafes that line the quayside and enjoying a delicious black coffee or smooth glass of port. Cais de Gaia across the river comes alive after sunset, and offers the added bonus of some amazing views of the river illuminated by the lights of the city.
Natives of this city are known as Tripeiros or tripe-eaters, because during the height of Portuguese naval power beginning in the 15th century the best cuts of meat went to sea with the sailors and the citizens had to make do with tripe. The dish is still a local specialty, so be sure not to end your Porto vacation without sampling some.
Porto is also the home of port wine, and there are countless bars, restaurants and cafes in the city where you can indulge in a glass. The best way to enjoy this fabulous beverage in the city of its birth is to take a port wine tour. Beginning in the cellars at the Vila Nova de Gaia, you’ll travel through the green hills in the countryside to explore different cellars and caves while enjoying their delicious contents.
Another unique way to learn about the city is a boat cruise up the Douro River. You’ll get some fantastic views of the historic city and the natural landscapes further upriver are truly stunning.
Porto was declared a “European Culture Capital” in 2001, and with good reason. The city’s museums, galleries and particularly concert halls are extremely impressive. The gigantic, art-deco Coliseu do Porto is one of the city’s most notable landmarks, and hosts various concerts, symphonies and conferences throughout the year.
The 18th-century São João National Theatre was recently restored to its former glory, and is one of the most important opera houses in the entire country. Don’t leave Porto without visiting the incredible Lello bookshop; voted on of the top three most beautiful in the world. Housed in a stunning building that features Art Nouveau and Gothic Revival architectural influences, you can scour the volumes that Lello has been selling since 1894 or even enjoy a cup of coffee or glass of port inside.
