Salvador is a major Brazilian coastal city, home to warm waters, vibrant culture, and a great party town. Fresh Atlantic seafood and produce from the fertile interior grace the plates of Salvador’s dishes, which astound with creativity and diversity. Local musical traditions has closer ties to American genres than many other areas of Brazil, with lyrics to incredibly funky jams often sung in English. Salvador’s Carnival is the world’s biggest party. Over 3 million people take to the streets over 7 days to party out the year before the season of Lent. The party starts when the King of Carnival, Rei Momo, receives the city keys, and continues as grandstands fill with spectators who cheer on colorful parades. Music blasts out all over the city, with bands and djs playing samba, reggae, and more. There are a total of 3 festival circuits, each with their own flavor and level of traditional involvement.
Brazil, like all South American countries, has a rich religious history, and Salvador is no exception. During your stay, you’ll have the chance to tour some incredible sites, including grand cathedrals and historic chapels. The Convento de Igreja de Sao Francisco is stunning decorated, with gold-covered woodwork covering nearly every surface inside. The ceiling displays incredible paintings, and as a whole, the church is truly golden. Other popular sites include the Igreja de Nosso Senhor do Bonfim, which is a place of pilgrimage for Catholics from all over Brazil.
Salvador also has a number of great museums. From Afro-Brazilian history to nautical inventions to modern art, the offerings are diverse enough to satisfy any palate.
