More than just the home of Mozart and known for the Sound of Music, Salzburg is an Austrian city with plenty of beautiful sights, a long history, and delicious food to be had. It is so close to Germany, you could even spend a day in Munich before returning to rest your head in Salzburg. Visit the many gardens, see the baroque buildings, and listen for the chiming church bells while on vacation in Salzburg. Visit the Marionette Theatre, stroll along the river, and explore the rich history of this city. From here you can make a biking trip to Vienna, or take the quicker and scenic route via the train.
You have a wealth of options of where to stay in picturesque Salzburg. Wake up in the city center, close to the famous Mirabell Gardens, or in an elegant 5-star hotel near the Salzach River. You can also have a basecamp within walking distance of the Salzburg hauptbahnhof for ease of visiting the rest of Austria or neighboring countries. For a busy itinerary, stay in the heart of the attractions less than a minute away from Old Town.
One of the iconic landmarks of Salzburg, the Festung Hohensalzburg is only a few minutes from the city center. Hike up to the 900-year-old fortress on a cliff or take the Festungsbahn funicular where you can easily spend a day. Visit the Augustiner Bräustübl for a brewery in a monastery that’s been serving since 1621. Find a seat in the beer garden that seats 1000 and drink from your Stein mug.
You’ll probably recognize Schloss Mirabell garden steps from the Sound of Music from the famous ‘Do-Re-Mi’ scene, but this palace was built long before then by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich in 1606, and remodeled in the baroque style in 1721. If you’re a fan of the movie, you are obligated by your inner child to go on a Sound of Music tour. See all of the filming locations and feel free to sing along with the soundtrack as you visit countless movie highlights like the interior of the Von Trapp house, and see the exterior where they shot the lake scenes.
Art historians or those curious about baroque style, visit the collection of paintings and designs in the Baroque Museum near Schloss Mirabell. Head to the Museum de Moderne Salzburg for over 17,000 Austrian photographs and a plethora of work by international artists.
Take the kids to the Haus der Natur for a fantastic day feeding sharks in the morning, spying vibrant tropical fish and coral reefs, and meeting some snakes and crocodiles in the reptile enclosure. For a day full of animals, continue on to the Salzburg Zoo.
Wander around the baroque Residenzplatz for the Salzburg Dom, Salzburg Museum, St. Peter’s Abbey, and a giant chessboard. The beautiful Residenzbrunnen marble fountain has four horses spouting water and a Triton with a conch shell. View world-famous paintings upstairs in the Salzburg museum, and the incredible 360-degree panorama of 1829 Salzburg in the Panorama Museum.
Enter the Mozarts Geburthaus, a vividly yellow house off of the square, for the birthplace of Mozart, born here in 1756. The home-turned-museum displays his mini-violin from childhood, several other instruments, and portraits.
