What to see and do in Santorini ?
Whether you take the ferry from Athens or Crete, or fly from mainland Europe, you’ll fall in love with the island with one glance.
Fira and Firostefani are the most popular spots to stay in Santorini. Here you’ll walk along white houses with bright blue doors and feel like you are a part of a film set before meeting the vantage points of donkeys climbing up the steps of the caldera. Don’t worry, you’re not dreaming, your Greek island vacation is actually happening.
Oia is quite possibly the most romantic spot in Greece because of its world-famous vibrant sunsets. It is a charming whitewashed village with dramatic views of the caldera and tavernas full of tasty mezze and refreshing drinks. You should definitely order anything with tomatoes in it: the volcanic nature of the soil is excellent for delicious crops. Don’t forget to taste the local white wine of Santorini in the restaurant or on a wine tour.
There is a beach for every kind of beach-goer on Santorini. Spend your days basking in the Aegean sun on Red Beach, aptly named for its volcanic sand and set against bold volcanic cliffs. Perissa and Perivolos are well-known for their black sand beaches and are complemented by their string of tavernas serving classic Greek dishes like fava, eggplant, and goats cheese.
Head to Kamari on the west side of the island for a perfect day reclining in the sunshine and watching the planes fly in. From here you can go on an Ancient Thira Tour up to the second-oldest uncovered ruins of the island and view the temples, mosaics, theatre, and agora from millennia ago.
For the most famous archaeological ruins on the Greek islands, make sure to visit Akrotiri; the site was completely covered in volcanic ash that preserved roads, furniture, and buildings up to three stories! You can view some of the preserved frescoes at the Prehistoric Thira Museum back in Fira.
